796: Sex and emancipation......

Since the birth of Christ it took 1878 years before the first woman in the Netherlands was allowed to complete a university degree at the University of Groningen and become a medical doctor.

By the way, the university of Groningen was also MY university where I got my degree in philosophy

This was all a rather peaceful proces. The emancipation of women was by no means as violent as the struggle of the civil rights movement, but there were several parallels in the 1960s.

During this decade, important changes took place in virtually all areas of sexual liberation.

In 1966 the first major homosexuality studies were started at the Kinsey Institute showing that 4% of men and 2% of women

were predominantly or completely homosexual, and that no less than 37% of men had at least a homosexual experience had.

In the same year, "Human Sexual Inadequacy" by William Howell Masters and Virginia Johnson demonstrated that there was some sexual problem in half of the marriages.

In the following year, 1967, the modern, mass-focused hard porn started to appear, published by Scandinavian magazine publishers.

In the same year, Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner, which at the time had a circulation of four million copies per month, appeared on the cover of Time magazine.

A year later ,the American novelist and short-story writer, Philip Roth's  "Portnoy's Complaint" appeared, investigating the suffering and pleasure of male masturbation,

and Oh! Calcutta! in London and off-Broadway, including nudes and explicit sexual dialogues.

When you google images with the search key "Oh! Calcutta! " you get an impression how serious the nudity on stage was.

Pubic hair was first seen in a commercial magazine in 1970: Penthouse. 50 years ago I liked Penthouse more than Playboy. :-)

In 1970, the Presidential Commission on Obscenities and Pornography reported that there was no evidence for the assumption that exposure to erotica led to sexual crimes.

The series of events in the field of sexuality got a sort of crowning in 1973 when the Supreme Court of America decided with seven against two votes to legalize abortion;

in the same year, the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from the diagnostic directions

and stated that gays and lesbians were not suffering from mental illness.

The pornography and gay liberation revolution was mainly about sexual freedom, but the women's emancipation movement was about much more than just the new sexual awareness of women.

That was important, but the change in the way women felt about themselves, initiated by Simone de Beauvoir after the Second World War, was much more fundamental and comprehensive.

We'll get back to the women who were important in the 1970s. Let's look at the situation today.

All over the US all rights to abortion are restricted again in many states. There goes our legacy.

On the other hand it seems that the US is one of the biggest producers of pornography. Another legacy...

Next lecture we'll discuss the trend setting women in this proces of emancipation.

Thank you for your attention again...

The Discussion

[13:15] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): thank you Herman
[13:15] herman Bergson: The floor is your again as always ^_^
[13:16] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako):
[13:16] CB Axel: OK. Let's talk about what porn has done for women, which is absolutely nothing.
[13:16] herman Bergson: The theme today is the sexual revolution that took place in the 60s-70s
[13:17] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): well its mostly nothing i like at all. Its too extreme and actually a turn off for me
[13:17] herman Bergson: I gagree,CB
[13:17] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): a big turn off even
[13:17] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): Boss in own belly we called it
[13:17] CB Axel: Alright then. How can you talk about the sexual revolution without mentioning birth control?
[13:17] oola Neruda: when combined with commercialization, it gave "role models " for naive girls
[13:17] herman Bergson: the abortion theme is an issue indeed...
[[13:18] CB Axel: Not only do conservatives in the US want to eliminate safe abortions, they want to restrict birth control.
[13:18] FrannyDJ Dean is online.
[13:18] herman Bergson: fact is that many US states are repressing the freedom of birth control again now
[13:18] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): restrict birthcontrol?
[13:18] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): why?
[13:19] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): because they think sex for pleasure is against gods will i guess
[13:19] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): once again
[13:19] CB Axel: Yes. I don't know. Because they want women out of the workplace and back to being chained to the home maybe.
[13:19] herman Bergson: It means that we ...that is th e US lost the legacy of the 29th century here....
[13:19] herman Bergson: 20th
[13:19] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): the sad circle repeats
[13:20] CB Axel: White men want the world to go back to when they made the rules and controlled everything.
[13:20] herman Bergson: I get that same impression, CB
[13:20] CB Axel: That means taking away rights from minorities, including women.
[13:20] herman Bergson: they want to return to the 1950s
[13:20] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): or een further back
[13:21] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): to the 1800s
[13:21] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): the world need less children, so birth control is a must
[13:21] oola Neruda: right
[13:21] herman Bergson: the  1950s in the US were ideal.... overt segregation and racism...women at home with the children...the happy family
[13:22] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): baking applepie:(
[13:22] herman Bergson: I remember...as a child....there was this American tv show...Father knows it better....it was called or something like that
[13:22] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): yes
[13:22] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hmm ok
[13:22] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): i saw it too
[13:22] herman Bergson: Yoy remember Beertje?
[13:23] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): yes
[13:23] herman Bergson: cool
[13:23] oola Neruda: same
[13:23] herman Bergson: Black and white v then
[13:23] CB Axel: Father Knows Best
[13:23] herman Bergson: That must be the right title CB, indeed
[13:24] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): i didn't agree that title then already
[13:24] herman Bergson: and tthat is what white conservatives want back again, I assume
[13:24] herman Bergson: Father Knows Best...you can find it on YouTube!
[13:25] CB Axel: The time period you have mentioned in your lecture was a time when TV shows were changing. Men were becoming the joke. They were bumbling oafs who's wives were the ones really in charge. :)
[13:25] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): Archie!
[13:25] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): Archie Bunker
[13:25] herman Bergson: Archie Bunker...yes
[13:25] CB Axel: What I don't think white men in the  US seem to realize is that they were probably never the majority.
[13:25] herman Bergson: Bu the wives were the smart ones IN the house
[13:26] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): now we are smart IN and OUT the house:)
[13:26] CB Axel: If you count all the blacks, Hispanics, Asians, native Americans, and women of all races I bet they have always outnumbered white men.
[13:26] herman Bergson: I think...as homework you shoud watch an episode of Father Knows Best.
[13:26] CB Axel: It about time white men are put in their places.
[13:27] herman Bergson: You'll find it on Youtube :-))
[13:27] herman Bergson: I'll do that ...wonder if it is what I recall of it
[13:27] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): aa ok
[13:28] jaynine Scarborough is online.
[13:28] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): we.. development must move forward a dn not backward
[13:28] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): thats for dure
[13:28] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): sure
[13:28] herman Bergson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXVEWmxkmbQ&list=PLdgUyXJjeaq94qFbXDRR8RISHHDAWTO0L
[13:29] herman Bergson: Fact is that white US males want to move backwards, Bejiita
[13:29] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): seems so sadly
[13:29] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): afraid to loose power?
[13:29] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and i guess Trump is a driving force accelerating this
[13:30] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): racist hate and spreading nonsense and lies
[13:30] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): that have to stop
[13:30] herman Bergson: I think he is part of the process indeed
[13:31] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): while calling everything else (which is the real facts) fake news
[13:31] CB Axel: He is making it acceptable behavior.
[13:31] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): so yes indeed!
[13:31] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): :(
[13:31] herman Bergson: I think, I'd better leave you now with "Father Knows Best" :-)
[13:31] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): worrying development
[13:32] oola Neruda: i feel that men have bought in to the stereotype of what a male is.... and men are trying to fill that image....there are so many people who just tear others down... especially bullies... and men have to have some kind of defense... the image of a REALMAN... is a defense
[13:32] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): im gonna check that show anyway and see what it is
[13:32] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hmm indeed yes
[13:32] herman Bergson: on the other hand....iyt is mainly an American problem....
[13:33] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): are man afraid of woman?
[13:33] oola Neruda: a means of protecting oneself
[13:33] herman Bergson: I don't see it in Europe
[13:33] herman Bergson: this male thing
[13:33] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): its that damn macho colture they have i guess
[13:33] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): culture
[13:33] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): dont cry, hate gays ect
[13:33] herman Bergson: masculine and aggressive Bejiita, yes
[13:33] oola Neruda: in south america and hispanic culture... it is rampant....
[13:34] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and most of all DONt SHOW YOUR FEELINGS
[13:34] oola Neruda: again... a "don't mess with me" defense
[13:34] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): well thats don't cry
[13:34] CB Axel: Unfortunately too many women like men like that.
[13:34] oola Neruda: i don't...
[13:34] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): its an issue making for this because men ar afraid that they are "weak" if they dont becave n this way
[13:35] Shiloh Emmons whispers: speaking culturally I would ask what factors are behaviors are existing to normalize power and the decision to control womens bodies.
[13:35] herman Bergson: American women, I guess CB
[13:35] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and thus this hate spiral
[13:35] Shiloh Emmons whispers: that was and *or , not are
[13:35] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and bullying ect
[13:35] herman Bergson: what do you mean Shiloh?
[13:36] oola Neruda whispers: alchol does not help
[13:36] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): well im a bit on alcohol still i guess, work party and golf tournament yesterday
[13:36] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): thats why i type so bad
[13:36] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): + tired
[13:36] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): cause my roommate was snoring like a JACKHAMMER!
[13:36] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): lo
[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): l
[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but was great fun
[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and remind me why i love to work at this company
[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako):
[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): a great team
[13:37] Shiloh Emmons: I am not so certain it is a macho or masculine prospect, has any one considered it might have religious influences
[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): well that can play a part too
[13:37] herman Bergson: I guess it has indeed....
[13:38] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): a combination of all these
[13:38] herman Bergson: in christianity the MAN is the head of the family
[13:38] oola Neruda: oh yes... and men go out of their way to find a bible verse to back it up
[13:38] oola Neruda: an excuse for the way they treat women
[13:39] oola Neruda: been there,,,,left the church
[13:39] herman Bergson: If I am not mistaken it is Paul, chapter 13 where it is said that the woman has to obey the husband
[13:39] oola Neruda: in all things
[13:39] oola Neruda: even if it is illegal...he is always right
[13:39] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed and that is seen also in these porn films, i dont think the women enjoys that,  they are letting themselves been used like that for money, its awful
[13:39] Shiloh Emmons: not sure the Bible might not have misinterpreted the real teachings, but that is a personal opinion
[13:39] Shiloh Emmons: have been
[13:40] oola Neruda: yes..it is human error...
[13:40] oola Neruda: "error"
[13:40] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): well something is wrong
[13:41] herman Bergson: At least we may conclude that in the late 60s and early 70s the emancipation of women really took shape.....
[13:41] herman Bergson: especially regarding sexual freedom
[13:42] herman Bergson: inside and outside marriage
[13:42] Shiloh Emmons: how global was that emancipation? or, was it ?
[13:42] herman Bergson: It was global in the sense that it also happende din Europe....we had our Anja Meulenbelt :-))
[13:43] Shiloh Emmons: ahhhh
[13:43] herman Bergson: Besides...the women I'll discuss in next lecture studied in the UK , were not of US origine
[13:44] CB Axel: Interesting
[13:44] herman Bergson: So, I'd say..let's enjoy the weekend...Sunday is my birthday and we'll have a party in RL :-)
[13:45] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): yay!
[13:45] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako):
[13:45] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): YAY! (yay!)
[13:45] bergfrau Apfelbaum: Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw !!!!!
[13:45] herman Bergson: Next Tuesday I'll be a proud 70 year old MAN :-))

[13:45] CB Axel: Happy birthday!
[13:45] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): lol
[13:46] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): happy bday
[13:46] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako):
[13:46] herman Bergson: Thank you CB :-)
[13:46] bergfrau Apfelbaum: that's wonderful Herman !!
[13:46] herman Bergson: I am ready for it :-))
[13:46] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): proud to be a senior:)
[13:46] herman Bergson: I am Beeertje :-)
[13:46] herman Bergson: So thank you all again for your participation....
[13:47] herman Bergson: Class dismissed...^_^
[13:47] CB Axel: Thank you, Herman.

[13:47] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): cu Herman and have a great party!
