1176{ All kinds of Happiness....

Feeling happy and having found the answer to the question "Why am I here?"  are definitely not the same mental condition. The most striking difference, perhaps, is that this feeling of happiness can be caused by some pill or powder you took.

Pills that reveal to you what the meaning of your life is, still haven't been invented. While happiness is mainly physically based on the production of hormones, which means that other primates probably know feelings of happiness too,

understanding the meaning of your life is a more mental thing. The mind is involved. And that mind produces several answers, where there is a remarkable difference between East and West.

According to Buddhism, "true happiness" is achieved when all desires are overcome and one reaches nirvana. In Hinduism, on the other hand, happiness is achieved when the division between the soul or the deeper self, Atman, and the pure consciousness, Brahman, is abolished, or when the soul and consciousness become one.

In Confucianism, happiness consists of a balance between the lesser physical self and the greater moral self, and to achieve this requires wisdom and an insight into the virtues.

In Taoism, according to Lao Zi (sixth century BCE), perfect happiness is achieved when we manage to bring our lives into harmony with the mystical notion of the Tao, the 'Way' so that one becomes one with the rites of the All.

Despite the diversity between these Eastern philosophies, we also find a certain unity: happiness lies in creating a balance between two concepts that are presented as opposites:

desire and its absence, soul and consciousness, the physical and the moral, life and the Way. It is always about the relationship between the individual and the world in which he lives.

A completely different concept of happiness can be found in the monotheistic religions, which have come to dominate the West. Happiness here is characterized by an almighty God.

Within Judaism, happiness is seen as an essential part of worshipping God. In Psalm 100, for example, it is called upon to worship God with joy and joyful songs.

This view of happiness as a religious commandment that arises from the worship of God can also be found in Christianity and Islam. The Christian concept of happiness is strongly influenced by Greek philosophy, as theologian Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) emphasizes.

According to him, happiness is the achievement of a beatific vision of God's being in the next life. This means that happiness is not only to be found in this life but that it can only be fully realized in the hereafter.

In Islam, achieving perfect happiness in the hereafter is also seen as the goal of earthly life. The philosopher and theologian al-Ghazali (1058-1111) wrote a detailed manual called "Alchemy of Happiness",

in which he explains how we can achieve happiness after death through life on earth. This includes, among other things, adhering to religious precepts and following the teachings of the Qur'an. Even then, people were writing self-help books.

A few points to mention: the kind of happiness discussed here is not produced by a pill or powder, but by a special lifestyle. The pursuit of this special happiness can become the meaning of life for people.

The East focuses on the self in this world, while the West tries to find it outside the self and this world. I have no explanation for these different orientations.

Thank you for your attention...the floor is yours...

The Discussion

[13:33] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): Thank you Herman

[13:33] herman Bergson: By the way....

[13:33] herman Bergson: This makes me think...

[13:34] herman Bergson: When I walk through my neighborhood I see a lot of Buddha statues...in gardens, in windows, small , big...

[13:34] herman Bergson: Is there a relation between secularisation and the focus on the self?

[13:35] herman Bergson: To put it in another way....

[13:35] herman Bergson: The West has been thinking vertically through the ages....The East has been thinking horizontal, I'd say

[13:36] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): Those Buddha statues are very piecefull, they remind you to stay calm in every situation

[13:36] herman Bergson: And with the Buddha statues, maybe people here express their horizontal thinking now...

[13:36] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): i have one too:)

[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): yes they are a symbol of piece for me aso

[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): alco

[13:37] herman Bergson: Now I realize....I have one too here on my desk...the laughing Buddha...was a gift :-)

[13:37] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont):

[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i also have one somewhere

[13:37] herman Bergson: somewhere..

[13:38] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): i have a young buddha, a little monk

[13:38] herman Bergson: I always thought my buddha was crying....

[13:38] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): many different religion members also accept the Buddhist way of life leads to happiness

[13:38] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ok

[13:38] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): there are zillions of buddhas

[13:39] herman Bergson: but it seeks it is called the laughing buddha

[13:39] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): yes

[13:39] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): yes

[13:39] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont):

[13:39] herman Bergson: Maybe people find some meaning in buddhist thought?

[13:40] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): Buddhism is not a religion

[13:40] herman Bergson: no no....

[13:40] herman Bergson: neither Taoism or Confucianism

[13:40] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed there is no god, Buddha is the "god"

[13:41] herman Bergson: Hinuism is a polytheistic religion

[13:41] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): yes

[13:41] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): wonder how many gods they have in total

[13:42] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): look at the ceiling Bejiita

[13:42] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): a few indeed

[13:42] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako):

[13:42] herman Bergson: And those aren't even the Hinduist ones, Beertje

[13:42] herman Bergson: That would fill the whole sky of this sim, I guess

[13:43] Second Life: Gemma Cleanslate gave you Reliable Fact Checking .
