Actually, I had a completely different subject in mind for today's lecture, but my morning newspaper made me change my mind.
"Don't fall for the hype: ChatGPT is really, really dumb". That was the headline of a column in my morning newspaper. A nice surprise after my lecture of last Tuesday.
There I showed you that ChatGPT was able to offer decent replies to my questions, which I wouldn't qualify as dumb answers. On the contrary, I admit ChatGPT was philosophically biased, but in a way that pleased me.
The columnist Ilyaz Nasrullah usually doesn't write about hypes, but this time he writes: "Obviously I've changed my mind, and that's because of the articles that appeared in Trouw about ChatGPT.
They didn't tell you what you should know: ChatGPT is really stupid and completely unreliable.
Admittedly, that statement is not entirely correct. The word 'stupid' makes it seem like there is some intelligence behind ChatGPT after all, just very little. What I mean is that the ChatGPT is totally lacking in intelligence." -end quote-
A bold statement, is he right? As an example, he tells about his attempt to play chess with ChatGPT. It was a disaster. I tried it myself too and indeed a disaster.
The first move pawn e2 - e4 was correct, like my answer pawn e7 - e5, but then the Artificial Intelligence made a 100% illegal move. I brought it to its attention,
Chat GPT answered you are right, I apologize for my error, and then it corrected itself by making another illegal move.
-Quote- "“Okay”, you may think, “ChatGPT can't play chess. So what? It can do other things. Moreover, many people can't play chess either, they aren't stupid either, are they?"
That's right. It's not about ChatGPT making mistakes, but what the mistakes show about how the technology behind it works. Computer scientists call software programs such as ChatGPT large language models.
Such a program is created by feeding it with astronomical amounts of text. Based on those texts, a model is built of words that should probably follow each other. So ChatGPT is a plausible sentence generator.
Those sentences are produced without an understanding of the words used, but with the help of that incredibly elaborate statistical model of those words." -end quote-
A nice designation: "plausible sentence generator". That is what ChatGPT did when answering my philosophical questions and as I said last Tuesday: such an Artificial Intelligence only produces what humans have given it as input.
The article ends thus: -Quote-"Hundreds, if not thousands, of subtle and explicit examples of this behavior can be found online in many fields of knowledge.
Unfortunately, the behavior is inherent in the technology itself and is exactly what makes ChatGPT completely unreliable. Even when it appears that it "understands" a subject, it is no more than an impressive illusion.
So don't fall for the hype, because this illusion is dangerous if you don't see through it." -end quote-
Do I agree with the author? If you are an expert yourself, you can judge ChatGPT's answers on their correctness and quality.
If you are a layman on a certain topic, then it does indeed become problematic to determine what the answers of ChatGPT are useful to you.
You can protect yourself against this by asking the question in Google "What is the reliability of ChatGPT?" Very educational......it will put the whole AI phenomenon in the right perspective.
