In the previous lecture, we discussed Basic Laws One and Two of Stupidity. let's deal with the remaining three today.
The Third Law: A stupid person is someone who causes losses to another person or group while deriving no gain for themselves and possibly even incurring losses.
When confronted for the first time with the Third Basic Law, rational people instinctively react with feelings of skepticism and incredulousness. The fact is that reasonable people have difficulty in conceiving and understanding unreasonable behavior.
Unlike a bandit, who harms others for personal gain, a stupid person creates chaos without reason or benefit. Their actions defy logic and often damage themselves as well. This is what makes stupidity more dangerous than malice. It is irrational and unpredictable.
The Fourth Law: Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. Non-stupid people often fail to recognize the destructive potential of stupid individuals.
They assume that stupid actions will be limited or contained, but in reality, stupid people can cause disproportionate harm. Up-to-date example: indiscriminately freezing all federal funds by Trump.
This leaves us with one final and Fifth Basic Law of Human Stupidity.
The Fifth Law: A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.
Cipolla concludes that stupid people are more dangerous than bandits or malicious individuals because their actions are unpredictable and irrational.
Unlike bandits, who act with a purpose, even if harmful, stupid people act without logic or reason, making it difficult to anticipate or defend against their behavior.
Their actions can destabilize systems, relationships, and societies in ways that are far more damaging than the actions of rational but selfish individuals.
There is no pleasure in saying it, but the actions of Trump and Musk are a painful example of stupid behavior, destabilizing a whole system, because the system has no organized way to respond to a flood of illegal executive orders.
It seems that a counter-movement from the judiciary system finally begins to emerge, but the chaos is already there. This "Flood the zone" policy may be intended to grab dictatorial power, when chaos is complete. I hope not and assume that it still is the rule of stupidity.
Cipolla’s laws highlight the pervasive and destructive nature of stupidity. They serve as a humorous yet cautionary reminder to be aware of the irrational and harmful behaviors that can arise from individuals who act without reason or self-interest.
The laws also emphasize the importance of recognizing and mitigating the impact of stupidity in personal, professional, and societal contexts.
Fighting stupidity is challenging because, as Carlo Cipolla pointed out, stupidity is unpredictable and widespread. However, it is not impossible to counteract its effects. How to do that is our next station.
The floor is yours....thank you for your attention.

The Discussion
[13:22] herman Bergson: To refresh your memory....
[13:23] herman Bergson: The first law was, that we always underestimate the number of stupid people in a population
[13:23] herman Bergson: the second law was, that stupidity is independent of IQ, social status, education, income etc.
[13:23] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): Mr T is not only stupid, but he is a narcist and is dement
[13:24] herman Bergson: Stupid is just ONE label...it never describes a personality completely
[13:25] herman Bergson: But behaving stupidly is dangerous enough
[13:25] Max Chatnoir: Why do you think that stupidity is resistant to education?
[13:26] herman Bergson: Because it is irrational, Max....you cant refutate stupidity by facts
[13:27] herman Bergson: stupidity is a human trait.....a person can reduce it by education...but you can't fight it from the outside...
[13:28] herman Bergson: Take for instance the promise of mass deportation in the US
[13:28] Max Chatnoir: I think it might have something to do with assuming you are always right. That's difficult for most people, and maybe impossible for some.
[13:28] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i think my computer got mad at me when i said that automated machines operate by themself!
[13:28] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): finally got in
[13:28] herman Bergson: Take a seat Bejiita
[13:28] Max Chatnoir: Glad you're back, Bejiita
[13:28] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hmm
[13:29] herman Bergson: We kept one free for you :-)
[13:29] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i dont give up at lesast
[13:29] herman Bergson: As I said.. the mass deportations....
[13:29] herman Bergson: reasonable people said....that is utter nonsense..... a stupid and harmful idea
[13:30] herman Bergson: It concerns more than 13 million people living in the US
[13:30] herman Bergson: What about the procedures, the logistics etc?
[13:30] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): including Melania..she is a foreigner too
[13:31] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): aaah
[13:31] herman Bergson: If you confront a stupid person with such fact...no effect on his opinion....yeah let's do it beginning day One
[13:31] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): damaging themselves in the process, well thats true, Trump and Musk are 2 of the most hated persons in the entire world right now
[13:31] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): everyone are against them cause of their actions,
[13:31] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): who will work in the fields helping the farmers?
[13:32] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): exactly
[13:32] herman Bergson: Beertje...it will be a disaster.... and in construction....the same....millions of undocumented people work there....
[13:32] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): hunger is on the horizon
[13:33] herman Bergson: Besides ..many of them already live in the US for decades
[13:33] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): Trump thinks that all work should be performed by americans only
[13:33] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): + white and male
[13:33] Max Chatnoir: and pay taxes
[13:33] herman Bergson: yes Max
[13:33] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed,
[13:34] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): Trump is just like Hitler - the gas chambers
[13:34] herman Bergson: I am sorry to say, but at the moment it seems that the US is the example of the consequences of stupid behavior by its leader4
[13:34] herman Bergson: Please Bejiita...I prefer to refrain from such talk
[13:35] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): who can stop the behaviour of Trump?
[13:35] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): well he was worse but his racialm imaging and eugenics, that only white Americans ect
[13:35] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): he has to be stipped thats for sure
[13:35] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): stopped
[13:36] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): he just cause damage
[13:36] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and chaos
[13:36] herman Bergson: That I was wondering too Beertje, but more and more State law is applied by judges that block the effects of the T ex orders
[13:36] herman Bergson: But because this all is so unfamiliar and new, they are still learning
[13:36] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): at least there are some left in the way of Ts plans it seems
[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): still huge damage already done
[13:38] herman Bergson: And all of this is happening in less than three weeks!
[13:38] Max Chatnoir: The massive job deconstruction is going to make resisting all of that more difficult.
[13:38] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): yes
[13:38] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i knew it would be bad but not THIS bad,
[13:39] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): well he did everything he said he was gonna do
[13:39] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): he wasnt bluffing
[13:39] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): it can be worse...he is preparing his son Barron...
[13:39] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): T is old..but Barron is a joung boy
[13:39] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ok
[13:40] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and Barron is just like Trump i guess, same ideologies
[13:40] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): a dynasty of Trumps....brrr
[13:40] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): (shudders)
[13:40] herman Bergson: But as you see....it is hard to fight against stupid, unpredictable behavior.
[13:40] Max Chatnoir: There's a horror story!
[13:40] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): end of the world
[13:41] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): at least of USA
[13:41] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but the US affects the entire world so
[13:41] herman Bergson: I dont see it that dramatic.....
[13:41] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): well as long the nukes dont start flying i guess i can be calm here
[13:42] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ´but still its cray, and scary
[13:42] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): crazy
[13:42] herman Bergson: Just wait and see....slowly but steadily the dominating power in the world will shift to China
[13:42] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): that seems a likey outcome also
[13:42] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): from what i have heard
[13:42] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): yes I'm afraid so
[13:43] Max Chatnoir: Not very encouraging.
[13:43] herman Bergson: The moment the dollar will no longer be the international value standard, it will be the end of the US power
[13:43] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): yes
[13:43] herman Bergson: I don't know, Max
[13:43] herman Bergson: All through history empires have collapsed...
[13:44] herman Bergson: The Persian empire, the Roman Emipire
[13:44] herman Bergson: The British Empire ruling the waves
[13:44] Max Chatnoir: True, but not a happy event for most of the population.
[13:45] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): poverty and hunger for most of them
[13:45] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): its 2025 and i thought maniacs like Putin, Trump, the Ayatollas and talibans ect ect would be a thing of the past by now
[13:45] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but i guess its just my dream of a happy peaceful world
[13:46] herman Bergson: The transition always seems to be accompanied by a period of chaos, yes
[13:46] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): still it fells like something will change soon after all everyone are pissed at T and Musk
[13:46] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): something will happen
[13:46] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): history repeats itself Bejiita
[13:46] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): sadly it seems so
[13:46] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): well
[13:47] herman Bergson: And Chaos it is in many respects at the moment....
[13:47] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i hope for the best in the end , all i can do
[13:47] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): as said, the people have already had enough of this
[13:47] herman Bergson: if you hear the reports on China.....
[13:47] herman Bergson: if is moving slowly and slowly spreading its power
[13:48] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): china the world dictator
[13:48] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): (shudders again)
[13:48] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): well
[13:48] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): they wont crush our democracy!
[13:48] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): our freedom
[13:48] herman Bergson: Just today....a small island group near New Zealand contracted with China on matters of trade and energy...
[13:49] Max Chatnoir: No, we'll beat them to it and crush it ourselves!
[13:49] herman Bergson: New Zealand is very upset, for it always assumed that those islands would side with it
[13:49] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ok
[13:49] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hmm
[13:49] herman Bergson: Look at China....
[13:50] herman Bergson: It is as modern as any Western country today....
[13:50] herman Bergson: Chinese are changing into consumers....they too love iPhones and Samsung S25... and cars...even a Tesla you can buy in China!
[13:51] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ah
[13:51] herman Bergson: politically it isn't a democracy....but there is food on the table for the people...and fancy products to buy....
[13:52] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): and their fisherman robbe all the fish from the seas
[13:52] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): ask the Philippine people
[13:52] herman Bergson: There might come a period that the Chinese people emancipate and will fight for (some kind of) free speech...
[13:53] herman Bergson: There you see, Beertje....they go for their personal profit.
[13:53] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): yes
[13:53] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): Hope so, even if they might be somewhat satisfied havind food and nice things
[13:54] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): they don't care for the planet
[13:54] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): still freedom is important
[13:54] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hmm
[13:54] herman Bergson: No, like Trump wants plastic straws in his lemonade again
[13:54] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): lol yes
[13:55] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): heard they still start up 2 coal fored power plants each weel because AI demands so much energy, says a bit about the ethics of AI, everytime u use an AI search it takes several car tanks of gasoline worth of energy
[13:55] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): it just EATS eectricity
[13:55] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): electricity
[13:56] herman Bergson: But what I want to say is, that the chinese are as human as we are, with the same wishes and expectations....safety, food, a house, education, a job, a family and if possible some freedom of speech too
[13:56] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed
[13:56] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): so true
[13:57] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): but XI won't let them speak free
[13:57] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): exactly
[13:57] herman Bergson: and the more the US disintegrates and the Chinese get more organized, it might result in a shift in the balance of power on this globe
[13:58] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): who is worse? T or Xi?
[13:59] bergfrau Apfelbaum: Putin
[13:59] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): both are monsters we need to get rid of
[13:59] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): aaa and putin also
[13:59] herman Bergson: For the continued existence of their society Trump is the greatest danger to his country, I'd say
[13:59] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and Netan also
[13:59] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): true Herman
[14:00] herman Bergson: We may forget one factor in this story....and that is the possession of nuclear weapons in relation to the balance of power
[14:00] herman Bergson: thank you Bejiita
[14:00] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): thats the really scary part
[14:00] Max Chatnoir: Yes, he is systematically taking it apart.
[14:01] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but hopefully... noone wil use them
[14:01] herman Bergson: Someone could act stupid regarding nuclear weapons...
[14:01] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but these are maniacs we are dealing with
[14:01] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): exactly
[14:01] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed Herman
[14:01] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): then its byebye world
[14:01] herman Bergson: thank you Bejiita :-)
[14:02] Max Chatnoir: Yes, or about the next potential pandemic to come along.
[14:02] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): they can crate biological wweapons
[14:02] herman Bergson: ahh yes Max, that is a new factor too...
[14:02] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): im still not worried yet though, as said it seels like something will change soon
[14:02] herman Bergson: You hear little about that Beertje
[14:02] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): seems
[14:02] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i have a feeling
[14:03] Max Chatnoir: Well, there has been some resistance.
[14:03] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): yes
[14:03] herman Bergson: Such a pandemic is a tough lesson about uncontrolable viruses....
[14:03] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): yes
[14:03] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed
[14:03] herman Bergson: Nuclear and biological weapons....the use of it is the ultimate of stupiditiy....
[14:04] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): THAT is for sure
[14:04] herman Bergson: because inevitably it will always harm both parties
[14:04] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i surley hope it doesnt go that far ever
[14:05] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): scary stuff
[14:05] herman Bergson: if you destroy Europe and its infrastructure you lose a huge part of the production of many necessay commodities for instance
[14:05] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): yes
[14:05] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): who says in all these million years that the earth exists that this didn't happen before? are we the first people on this planet?
[14:05] herman Bergson: same for US or Russia
[14:05] herman Bergson: Total destruction has happened
[14:06] herman Bergson: The dinosaurs are gone for instance
[14:06] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but that was before our time
[14:06] Max Chatnoir: I'm concerned about public education. Vouchers, etc.
[14:06] bergfrau Apfelbaum: believe in the good in most people.. regardless of nation
[14:06] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed bergie
[14:07] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): as u say Herman, most people are ok, the issue is that one or just a few maniacs can cause so much damage
[14:07] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and danger
[14:07] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): because they have power
[14:07] herman Bergson: That is the point Bergie.... Through history mankind still has survived...even when 50% of the European population died during the Plague in the Middle Ages
[14:07] Max Chatnoir: Is the good enough? I don't think the people that put him in office were evil.
[14:08] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): just uneducated
[14:08] herman Bergson: No, Max, they were just less educated and susceptable for real facts
[14:08] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): wich is why we want to trash education system to begin with, to kep the people stupid so he can stay in power
[14:08] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): so they vote for him again
[14:08] herman Bergson: and to some extend also anti-social
[14:08] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): he
[14:09] bergfrau Apfelbaum: those who voted for him are simply afraid too. And if someone looks so stupid and shouts like that, maybe he can help.... in American shows everyone shouts!! the presenter and the audience too..... that's why I can't watch for long. Is shouting a type of power?
[14:09] bergfrau Apfelbaum: oops so viel
[14:09] bergfrau Apfelbaum: sry:-)
[14:09] herman Bergson: and there were a lot of conservative christians that hate democrates
[14:10] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hmm
[14:10] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ah
[14:10] Max Chatnoir: Also, to come back to immigrant deportation, I think we have to ask why so many of the jobs held by immigrants are so unpleasant that nobody with any choice wants to do them.
[14:10] herman Bergson: Good question....
[14:11] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ok hmm
[14:11] herman Bergson: we have the same problem in the Nehterlands Max
[14:11] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but still u need a large enough working force
[14:11] herman Bergson: so we ïmport"a lot of people from POland for instance....but all legally
[14:11] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): or are americans to lazy?
[14:12] Max Chatnoir: But the working conditions need to be humane and you have to make a living wage.
[14:12] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): true Max
[14:12] herman Bergson: Why won't Dutch people do the jobs these people from Poland do?
[14:12] herman Bergson: And that is the point, Max...
[14:12] Max Chatnoir: I don't think it's just laziness.
[14:13] herman Bergson: the capitalist system demands creating profitsd...which means lowering costs...
[14:13] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hmm
[14:13] herman Bergson: No...laziness as an argument is nonsense....
[14:14] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i guess its the usual increase profits lower costs, increase profits- lower costs, that spiral then
[14:14] herman Bergson: wages and working conditions are a primary issue....but that costs....and that doesn't like the employer...
[14:14] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): infinite growth
[14:14] herman Bergson: so the cheaper the better for him
[14:14] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): like we talked about before
[14:14] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed
[14:15] Max Chatnoir: I see this commercial on TV about cheap housecleaners. There's something wrong with that commercial.
[14:15] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): lot's of Polish people send their part of money to their parants at home in Poland
[14:15] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ok
[14:15] Max Chatnoir: The first line is "We fired our housekeeper and got a cheaper one" basically.
[14:15] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): sheesh
[14:15] herman Bergson: and when you get paid in Poland much less for the same job, you to the Netherlands and earn twice as much, though according to Dutch standards, it is way to less
[14:15] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): well THAT one os wrong for sure
[14:15] Max Chatnoir: Low wage jobs are not adequately respected.
[14:16] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): using people
[14:16] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed
[14:16] herman Bergson: Well, I guess we saved the world twice by now :-)
[14:16] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): everything is expensive here, groceries are much cheaper in Germany
[14:17] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ok
[14:17] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): well lets keep doing it!
[14:17] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): as said i still have hope
[14:17] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): that something will soon change
[14:17] Max Chatnoir: Let's see what happens in week 4!
[14:17] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): yes, as said EVERYONE are pissed at them now
[14:18] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): another 4 years to go Max
[14:18] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): dont think so, something will tip, the people have had enough
[14:18] Max Chatnoir: So far ALL of the cabinet choices are moving along...
[14:18] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hopefully
[14:18] herman Bergson: Right, Max..... resistance is increasing....Tesla stock is going down....so let's see
[14:18] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): yes!
[14:18] herman Bergson: thank you all again....
