771: Let's Talk about Sex.....

In the spring of 1947, Simone De Beauvoir went to America to give lectures throughout the country.

She always was announced as "existentialist No. 2 of France". Jean-Paul Sartre was of course number one.

In Chicago she met Nelson Algren, a writer. They almost immediately became lovers and, she later said, achieved her "first complete orgasm."

She was then 39 years old. With him she learned, in her own words, "how passionate love between man and woman could really be."

Despite her aversion to America, a feeling she shared with Sartre, she was in no hurry to return to France.

And when she returned, she was a different woman. Her meeting with Algren had strengthened her self-confidence.

Not wanting to leave Sartre, Nelson Algren and Simone De Beauvoir wrote letters to each other for seventeen years.

Nelson Algren was a tragic figure: unhappy, lonely and always in conflict with himself.

Simone de Beauvoir tore him out of his isolation. Through her he met people again,

became interested in politics, read work by other writers. Both lived for literature.

This experience helped her to complete her project, being a woman and write "Le deuxième sexe" (The second sex), published in 1949.

The book consists of two parts. Part one "Facts and Myths" offers a historical overview of the position of women through the ages.

Part two "Lived experience" elaborates on youth to old age, It deals with love, sex, lesbian love, marriage, abortion.

The book is one of the first signs after World War Two, that there emerged a clear tendency

to rethink the general view on women, sexuality and relations.

The main thesis of "Le deuxième sexe"  was that society is waisting and neglecting the talents of women.

In 1960, Beauvoir wrote that  "The Second Sex" was an attempt to explain "why a woman's situation, still, even today, prevents her from exploring the world's basic problems."

The attack on psychoanalysis in "The Second Sex" helped to inspire subsequent feminist arguments against psychoanalysis,

including those of Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique (1963), Kate Millett's Sexual Politics (1969), and Germaine Greer's The Female Eunuch (1970).

In the same post-war period the famous Kinsey reports were published: Sexual Behavior in the Human Male (1948) and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female (1953).

Alfred Kinsey is widely regarded as the first major figure in American sexology; his research is cited

as having paved the way for a deeper exploration into sexuality among sexologists and the general public, as well as liberating female sexuality.

Sexuality, homo and lesbian sexuality and the position of men and women in relation to this subject and in relation to society in general became the game changers of the 1950s and 1960s

How much of these developments have reached the 21st century....?

The Discussion

[13:16] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): thank you Herman
[13:17] herman Bergson: It seems that feminism still exists :-)
[13:17] herman Bergson: #MeToo for instance
[[13:18] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): I think there has a lot changed sins the 1960, homo's and lesbiennes can get married now
[13:18] herman Bergson: Abortion is easier to obtain
[13:18] herman Bergson: Ah yes indeed Beertje!
[13:18] CB Axel: IMHO, the important thing is not that women are sexual beings but that we are not just sexual beings. Were are people with brains.
[13:18] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): But there is still much to do in many countries
[13:18] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): true cb
[13:18] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): I'm Sorry! i got a visitor
[13:18] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): I sorry..
[13:18] Alarice Beaumont: yes but still a woman who does it isn't excepted... and women with children still can't keep their jobs.
[13:19] herman Bergson: Indeed CB....lots of talent is waisted.....
[13:19] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed, :(
[13:19] herman Bergson: 50% of human talent isn't used actually....
[13:20] herman Bergson: wasted :-))
[13:20] Alarice Beaumont: wow.. that is much!
[13:20] CB Axel: Less if you count minorities.
[13:20] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): its like with Einstein who is well known for his ideas but his wife apparently was just as good genious but no one have ever heard of what she did
[13:20] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): :(
[13:20] herman Bergson: All women that can't have a career...
[13:20] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): still woman don't get the same money for the same job as a man
[13:20] Alarice Beaumont: yes.. same with painters
[13:20] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): no they don't
[13:20] Alarice Beaumont: ah.. that is not really correct!
[13:21] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): Marie Curie and Ada Lovelace are 2 of the few ones we have hear of
[13:21] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): only in a few careers
[13:21] herman Bergson: all true
[13:21] Alarice Beaumont: the thing is that women cannot keep their jobs when having children.. therefore they don't get the money because they only work parttime!
[13:21] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): woman writers are not accepted as mature writers
[13:22] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): also strange and unfair
[13:22] Alarice Beaumont: if you work a lifetime... I think a women can earn the same money...
[13:22] herman Bergson: Irish Murdoch was, Beertje
[13:22] CB Axel: Rich women can keep their jobs. They can afford child care.
[13:22] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): i dont think so Alarice
[13:22] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): yes, but that's just one of many woman
[13:22] Alarice Beaumont: but women are sometimes still excluded from manager jobs! they don't get the jobs! that is the problem!
[13:22] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): many women are just finding out now how behind they are
[13:22] CB Axel: A lot of women writers used  male pseudonyms.
[13:23] Alarice Beaumont: yes CB
[13:23] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): very clever:)
[13:23] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): in usa for each 1.00 women get 79 cents
[13:23] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): that has been proven
[13:23] herman Bergson: We discussed 38 female  philosophers here
[13:23] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): but also this is very sad
[13:23] Alarice Beaumont: because they work part-time
[13:23] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed :(
[13:23] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): as said, very unfair
[13:23] Alarice Beaumont: or took a "lower" job because they have children and want flexibility
[13:23] Alarice Beaumont: in the same job... I would think they get the same money.. at least in Germany
[13:23] herman Bergson: But...it is a fact.....equality between man and woman is not yet a fact
[13:24] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): true Herman
[13:24] Alarice Beaumont: yes.. unfortunately right
[13:24] CB Axel: Many orchestras audition people behind curtains and walls so the ones doing the hiring can't see the person's color or gender.
[13:24] herman Bergson: which is pretty absurd when you think about it
[13:24] Alarice Beaumont whispers: yes.. and that 's not good either!
[13:24] Alarice Beaumont: oopss... lol
[13:24] herman Bergson: Yes CB....that is standard procedure
[13:25] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): strange indeed
[13:25] Alarice Beaumont: one should see the person whom one wants to hire!
[13:25] herman Bergson: Not when it is a musician :-)
[13:25] CB Axel: And women will but a gender neutral name on their CV's when applying for a job.
[13:25] Alarice Beaumont: cause somehow it's also a thing of sympathy
[13:25] herman Bergson: then you should hear the person :-)
[13:25] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): problem is that they base everything on what they see, not what the person can do
[13:25] Alarice Beaumont: the same thinking...
[13:26] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): its "ok ur a woman here is a mop!" and "so ur male u get to be CEO"
[13:26] Alarice Beaumont: yes... bad isn't it?!
[13:26] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): a little extreme example maybe but thats how they think it seems
[13:26] herman Bergson: So....how far did we get since the previous century?
[13:26] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): still today
[13:26] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): don't get it
[13:26] Alarice Beaumont: not very far... a little
[13:26] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): I think there has been progress
[13:26] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): not far enough
[13:26] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): the men are afraid to loose their power i guess
[13:26] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): right
[13:27] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): must be
[13:27] Alarice Beaumont: oh.. and the women don't work together!
[13:27] Alarice Beaumont: they work against each other
[13:27] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate) GIGGLES!!
[13:27] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ...LOL...
[13:27] Alarice Beaumont: that is a strange thing too!
[13:27] herman Bergson: Do they Alarice?
[13:27] Alarice Beaumont: yes! not all of course
[13:27] CB Axel: Not necessarily, Alarice.
[13:27] Alarice Beaumont: but too many
[13:27] herman Bergson: peculiar
[13:27] Alarice Beaumont: yes... it is
[13:27] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hmm
[13:27] Alarice Beaumont: man can fight and drink a beer after the fight
[13:27] CB Axel: In politics, the groups that have more women tend to work together better.
[13:28] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): i think so too
[13:28] Alarice Beaumont: women don't ... if they fight... hell.. they don't talk for a while
[13:28] herman Bergson: I  have the same feeling
[13:28] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): did you listen to that song i sent Tuesday ??
[13:28] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate) GIGGLES!!
[13:28] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ...LOL...
[13:28] Alarice Beaumont: women always are searching for a "friend"
[13:28] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): Simone would have loved it
[13:28] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): aaa
[13:28] herman Bergson: I watched two movies Gemma :-)
[13:28] Alarice Beaumont: really strange
[13:28] Alarice Beaumont: what song Gemma?
[13:28] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): which Herman
[13:28] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): i will send you the link Alarice
[13:28] CB Axel: During the last US presidential election people would say to me, "Aren't you going to vote for Hillary? She's a woman!"
[13:29] herman Bergson: The Help and Hidden Figures
[13:29] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): oh great
[13:29] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): did you like them?
[13:29] Alarice Beaumont: thanks gemma
[13:29] herman Bergson: terrific movies
[13:29] Alarice Beaumont: :)
[13:29] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): yes
[13:29] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): they both are
[13:29] CB Axel: I didn't vote for Hillary because she has a vagina. I voted for her because Trump is an idiot.
[13:29] Alarice Beaumont: loool
[13:30] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): smiles:)
[13:30] Alarice Beaumont: that is a good reason.. very reasonable :)
[13:30] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hahaha
[13:30] herman Bergson: there too is a woman that isnt respected as a person.....
[13:30] herman Bergson: in Hidden figures
[13:30] CB Axel: I preferred Bernie to Hillary.
[13:30] herman Bergson: tho she actually is a genius
[13:30] herman Bergson: but a woman and black
[13:31] herman Bergson: worst combination in the US :-)
[13:31] CB Axel: Yes. She had 2 strikes against her.
[13:31] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): I think Angela Merkel is such an example to all women
[13:31] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): Mutti:)
[13:31] herman Bergson: tough lady indeed
[13:31] CB Axel: I don't always agree with Merkel, but I do have a great deal of respect for her.
[13:31] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): strong!!!!!!!
[13:31] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): not tough
[13:31] herman Bergson: Yes...
[13:31] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed
[13:32] herman Bergson: Just imagine that she is an Ossi.....from Eastern Germany
[13:32] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): a true leader
[13:32] CB Axel: I pity Teresa May. Not as much respect, but a lot of pity. :-)
[13:32] CONNIE Eichel is online.
[13:32] herman Bergson: Yes...CB...I just don't get her...or whatever is going on there in parlement
[13:33] herman Bergson: Those Brits are really nuts :-)
[13:33] Alarice Beaumont: but Merkel acts like a man would.. she lives in a men world!
[13:33] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): hey
[13:33] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): still she is a woman
[13:33] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): she acts like a woman!!!!!!
[13:33] herman Bergson: YEs she does
[13:33] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): we all live in mens worlds
[13:33] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): even the church is a mans world
[13:33] Alarice Beaumont: lol but women raise men... that is the crazy thing!
[13:34] herman Bergson: And that should end, Gemma :-)
[13:34] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): more so than ever
[13:34] Alarice Beaumont: women form the society!
[13:34] CB Axel: Especially the church, Beertje
[13:34] herman Bergson: Be like the women of Sparta.....:-)
[13:34] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): hmmm
[13:34] herman Bergson: they controlled their men by refusing them their bodily pleasures :-)
[13:34] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): what would be a man without a woman?
[13:34] herman Bergson: YEs Beertje....
[13:34] Alarice Beaumont: oh yes!
[13:35] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hmm
[13:35] herman Bergson: sometimes I think that women are actually the most powerful people on earth
[13:35] CB Axel: We could be
[13:35] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate) GIGGLES!!
[13:35] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ...LOL...
[13:35] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): yes
[13:35] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): oh they are!
[13:35] Alarice Beaumont: lol
[13:35] Alarice Beaumont: we don't know how to use our powers cause we don'T unite
[13:35] herman Bergson: Yes....just how men chase them.....plead for their favours.....:-)
[13:35] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): that is why men have such a big mouth
[13:35] CB Axel: Men without women would be homosexuals. lol
[13:36] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): well there has been a lot of uniting in the past two years
[13:36] herman Bergson: Nothing else left to us CB :-)
[13:36] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): the door:)
[13:36] herman Bergson grins
[13:36] herman Bergson: Ok Beertje :-)
[13:36] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): sorry..:)))))
[13:37] herman Bergson: Girlpower :-)
[13:37] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): we all have that
[13:37] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): i did today too
[13:37] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate) GIGGLES!!
[13:37] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ...LOL...
[13:37] herman Bergson: But we may conclude that we still have not reached the situation Simone de Beauvoir dreamt of
[13:37] CONNIE Eichel is online.
[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako):
[13:37] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): had to go back and read the lecture
[13:37] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): oh yes
[13:38] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): and  perhaps will not
[13:38] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): she was not prefect either in her thinking
[13:38] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate) GIGGLES!!
[13:38] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ...LOL...
[13:38] CB Axel: There is a guy here in SL I liked. But he liked a woman who's av wore almost no clothes and and an animation that made her bend over with her nearly naked ass in the air.
[13:38] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate) GIGGLES!!
[13:38] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ...LOL...
[13:38] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): not like us
[13:38] CB Axel: Bitch presented like a mandrill.
[13:38] Alarice Beaumont: lol
[13:38] CB Axel: But that's what gets a man's attention.
[13:39] herman Bergson: very odd :-)
[13:39] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): lol CB
[13:39] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hehe
[13:39] herman Bergson: A lot of strange man in SL.....
[13:40] CB Axel: That guy lost a lot of my respect.
[13:40] herman Bergson: Well...guess we didn't make a lot of progress since 1949
[13:40] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate) GIGGLES!!
[13:40] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ...LOL...
[13:40] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): and some are not men but women
[13:40] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): adn some women are men
[13:40] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): thats true
[13:40] herman Bergson: very confusing indeed Gemma :-)
[13:40] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): and some are furries
[13:41] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): there is a lot of work to be done for woman
[13:41] CB Axel: The guy in question is a guy. And the mandrill in heat, oops, I mean lovely woman, is indeed a woman.
[13:41] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): thinks we are moving on and up tho
[13:41] CB Axel: Things are getting better.
[13:41] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): absolutely
[13:41] Alarice Beaumont whispers: hopefully... sometimes I think it's getting backwards
[13:41] herman Bergson: YEs...we make progress.....Gemma...but slowly
[13:41] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): why so slow?
[13:41] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): as in most issues
[13:42] Alarice Beaumont: lol yes Gemma
[13:42] CB Axel: When I was in paramedic school, our teacher (a woman) was thrilled that a woman was at the top of our class.
[13:42] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): education beertje
[13:42] herman Bergson: Men are pretty stubborn, Beertje :-)
[13:42] Alarice Beaumont: it take generations to implant changes lol
[13:42] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): it does
[13:42] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): in a mens head:)
[13:42] CB Axel:  °͜°
[13:42] CB Axel: There weren't many women paramedics back then. Almost half of the medics I worked with before I quit were women.
[13:42] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): it's made of concreet
[13:42] herman Bergson: in that sense....women can fight back with a #MeToo action for instance
[13:43] herman Bergson: Grabbing them by the pussy isnt for free anymore
[13:43] CB Axel: I think a lot of men had their eyes opened by #MeToo.
[13:43] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): grabbing him by the pipe:)
[13:43] Alarice Beaumont: ah.. that is just a one day thing... not really persistent
[13:43] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): according to our president it is
[13:43] CB Axel: They are good men themselves, but never really thought about how other men treated women.
[13:43] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i don't get why many men think they can just grab someone and have their way
[13:43] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): that is very true cb
[13:43] Alarice Beaumont: power
[13:44] herman Bergson: Yes Bejiita...pretty respectless
[13:44] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): are men afraid of woman?
[13:44] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): some are
[13:44] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): i think
[13:44] herman Bergson: I am not :-)
[13:44] Vonne (viva.enzo) is online.
[13:44] CB Axel: Bejiita, it's because they don't think of women in general as "someone." They think of us as a hole to stick their penises in.
[13:44] Alarice Beaumont: that's why they keep them down.. not educate them
[13:44] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i could never do that its a mutual thing, and if i for ex want to cuddle or have sex with someone i want that other person to feel as good and happy as me
[13:44] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): some  think of their grandmothers
[13:44] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate) GIGGLES!!
[13:44] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ...LOL...
[13:45] Alarice Beaumont: wow CB!
[13:45] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): well some do
[13:45] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed cb
[13:45] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i dont get it
[13:46] herman Bergson: Well...in SL you meet many examples of such men
[13:46] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): some attitudes i think are from watching the way their fathers treated mothers
[13:46] CB Axel:  °͜°
[13:46] CB Axel: I'm sorry. But this topic really makes me angry. And men should fear me.
[13:46] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): that is what i meant by education
[13:46] Alarice Beaumont: yes right Gemma
[13:46] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): thinks the young men and women need a lot of interacting education
[13:46] herman Bergson: That's not good, Gemma
[13:47] CB Axel: Yes. Both genders need better education.
[13:47] herman Bergson: No....that they emulate their parents behavior
[13:47] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): but they do Herman
[13:47] CB Axel: Women need to be able to work to support themselves and not rely on a man.
[13:47] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): that is also true
[13:47] herman Bergson: YEs CB....
[13:47] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): its the old saying such father such son
[13:47] Alarice Beaumont: yes.. CB that is the point!
[13:47] CB Axel: A woman should be with a man because she likes being with him. Not because she thinks she needs him.
[13:48] Alarice Beaumont: Many marriage wouldn't go on if women earned their own many
[13:48] Alarice Beaumont: *money
[13:48] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): true for sure
[13:48] Alarice Beaumont: in Germany the divorces increased at the time the women got more money from the social system after divorce
[13:48] herman Bergson: But that number of women is increasing Alarice....
[13:48] herman Bergson: That is what I mean. Alarice
[13:49] Alarice Beaumont: well.. the point is.. women still get the children..
[13:49] herman Bergson: Here in the Netherlands divorces at the age of 65 increase.....
[13:49] Alarice Beaumont: and they want to raise them
[13:49] CB Axel: Yes. It's time men started behaving like someone a woman wants to be near and not like someone a woman needs to save and protect her.
[13:49] CB Axel: And women need to learn to be self-sufficient.
[13:49] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): sharing
[13:49] Alarice Beaumont: so ..how earn money for your living when you need to look after a sick child?
[13:50] herman Bergson: That is because everyone gets a pension then .....financial independence after a marriage of 30 to 40 years
[13:50] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): either parent could look after the sick child
[13:50] CB Axel: Alarice, the men need to help care for that sick child.
[13:50] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): yes
[13:50] Alarice Beaumont: Gemma.. then you would need a system in the companies.. that one could be a manager and look after the child
[13:51] Nasty Calamity is offline.
[13:51] Alarice Beaumont: how do we are going to establish this?
[13:51] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): correct
[13:51] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): some countries have that
[13:51] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): Finland?
[13:51] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): Denmark?
[13:51] herman Bergson: Sweden
[13:51] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): yes
[13:51] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): yes
[13:51] CB Axel: Parents need to be able to take time off from work to care for the children.
[13:51] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): yep
[13:52] Alarice Beaumont: they do pay much more taxes then any other countries
[13:52] Alarice Beaumont: how do you get that into the brains of the people?!
[13:52] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): and they get their moneys worth
[13:52] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate) GIGGLES!!
