800: Heaven and Earth...

On 12 April 1961, at 6:07 am UTC, the Vostok 3KA-3 (Vostok 1) spacecraft was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome.

Aboard was Yurih Gagarin, the first human to travel into space for one hour and 48 minutes.

Some sources have said that Gagarin commented during his flight, "I don't see any God up here,"

though no such words appear in the verbatim record of his conversations with Earth stations during the spaceflight.  In a 2006 interview,

Gagarin's friend Colonel Valentin Petrov stated that Gagarin never said these words and that the quote originated from Nikita Khrushchev's speech

at the plenum of the Central Committee of the CPSU about the state's anti-religion campaign, saying "Gagarin flew into space, but didn't see any god there".

If there is one legacy of the 20th century, that had significant consequences, then we have to look at the Catholic Church.

Due to the low level of education of the masses Darwin's evolution theory wasn't such a threat around 1876.

But in the 1960-1970s the situation had completely changed.

Spectacular developments and discoveries by archeologists and paleontologist had changed the story and origin of mankind. A Garden of Eden in Africa?

The Catholic Church was already quite early aware of the growing threat. August 12, 1950 pope Pius XII published his "Humani Generis" (About Mankind).

It was a plea against "extreme non-christian philosophies like evolutionism, existentialism and historicism, who contribute to spreading misconceptions"

I'll skip the theologians like, Paul Tillich, Rudolf Bultman, Teilhard de Chardin who tried to find some compromis between science and religious beliefs.

The attempt to  modernize the Roman Catholic Church by the Second Vatican Concilium (1959 -1965) has proven to be a great failure.

And the train rumbled on. Genesis was replaced by "The First Three minutes" (1977)  by Steven Weinberg,

In which he described the development of the Big Bang. Astronomers take this theory for acceptable. It still puzzles me every day.

And life went on. The increase of divorces just continued. Women ignored any recommendations of the church regarding birth control and abortion.

The average age of churchgoers is about 70 or so at the moment. In ten years the churches in the Netherlands will be empty.

That is what the 20th century brought us. Take it or leave it, I'd say ....

Thank you for your attention again.....^_^

The Discussion

[13:24] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): thank you Herman
[13:24] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): is that the same in the US
[13:24] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): ?
[13:24] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): not quite
[13:24] herman Bergson: Yes I was wondering too Beertje
[13:25] herman Bergson: On the one hand you have the orthodox protestants....
[13:25] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): Catholic churches have less attendance
[13:25] herman Bergson: They stick more to the bible than catholics, I'd say
[13:25] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): finally it seems people start to wake up and realize how things REALLY works
[13:25] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): yes
[13:25] CB Axel: Just under 40% of Americans attend church, if you can believe the Pew Research Center.
[13:25] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): the evangelical churches are strong in the south and mid west especially
[13:26] herman Bergson: we have such a bible Belt too Gemma
[13:26] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): really??
[13:26] herman Bergson: oh yes...
[13:26] CB Axel: I have a big problem with people who claim to be Catholic but use birth control.
[13:26] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): oh yes:)
[13:26] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): that there is no magic man/entity with a beard on a cloud in the sky ordering us to rape murder and telling us that pleasure and sex is sinful
[13:26] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): why CB?
[13:27] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): SCIENCE rules
[13:27] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): facts
[13:27] CB Axel: If you don't believe the Church's teaching then how can you call yourself a Catholic.
[13:27] herman Bergson: hiih...slow down Bejiita ^_^
[13:27] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): there is much more to believe in thatn one item tho cb
[13:27] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): but one can think for themselves or not?
[13:27] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): they use situation ethics
[13:27] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but thats how it is, at least in some way with religion in general, it causes more suffering then good for sure
[13:28] CB Axel: They tend not to believe in transubstantiation, too.
[13:28] herman Bergson: That is hokus pokus indeed CB :-)
[13:29] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): i look at the evangelicals and how they dont even belive in the brotherhood of mankind
[13:29] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): i don't get it
[13:29] herman Bergson: It is Medieval superstition, I guess
[13:29] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): many are so white oriented still
[13:29] herman Bergson: No...the believe int the brotherhood of Trump, it seems
[13:30] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): and cant see the border issue as saving people as Christ would
[13:30] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): in the bible
[13:30] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): amazing stuff
[13:30] CB Axel: Beertje's burkha reminded me of how Muslims think their men are so strong, but the mere glimpse of a woman's skin or ever her hair is a threat to them.
[13:30] herman Bergson: yes Gemma...indeed
[13:30] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): man are not strong, they are very week
[13:31] herman Bergson: Yes...they have a sex problem CB , we know :-)
[13:31] CB Axel: So do Catholics and evangelicals.
[13:31] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): aaa
[13:31] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate) GIGGLES!!
[13:31] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ...LOL...
[13:31] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): so does the world
[13:31] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): in one way or another
[13:32] herman Bergson: Very weird but true to some extend...
[13:32] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed its just opression of women
[13:32] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): in only some countries tho bejiita
[13:32] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): some are more extreme then others
[13:32] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): it is not so in all muslim countries
[13:32] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but still
[13:32] herman Bergson: The `church lost it against emancipation of women, to begin with
[13:32] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): that this goes on today
[13:35] herman Bergson: One thing is clear.....there was only a negative legacy for the Church from the 20th century
[13:35] herman Bergson: and you can debate the question whether this is a good thing or bad thing ^_^
[13:36] herman Bergson: Some say religions and ideologies are a disater for mankind....
[13:36] herman Bergson: We should find a way  to unite on a common ground
[13:36] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): am not sure about that to be honest
[13:37] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): i think we can't unite
[13:37] herman Bergson: Elaborate in it Gemma...please
[13:37] CB Axel: Not sure about what, Gemma?
[13:37] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): we are too different
[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): well i agree, we should know better today. believe in fact and science, not magic and hocus pocus
[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but i guess that will not end all wars
[13:37] CB Axel: We are more the same than we are different.
[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): yes
[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): thats true
[13:37] herman Bergson: I'd say too
[13:38] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): we still have OIL and MONEY to war about
[13:38] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): i think like any other institution it brought good and bad to thw world during its history
[13:38] herman Bergson: Cultures differ, yes but they are man made, so they can change too
[13:38] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): aaa yes
[13:38] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): very true
[13:38] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): but willit change?
[13:39] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): if you don't believe what I believe I will cut your throat?
[13:39] herman Bergson: Yes Gemma, I agree but how much good is it bringing today, where the government has taken over all social and educational care?
[13:39] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): one thing i find crazy is i read before today that us military spend about 700 million dollars PER DAY! That money could have colonized mars and got rid of bad diseases like cancer say 10 years ago if we had spent those money on other things then killing each other
[13:40] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): such a tragic waste
[13:40] herman Bergson: I take the liberty to disagree with you, Bejiita :-)
[13:41] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but some progress would have been made at least
[13:41] herman Bergson: There is also some kind of geo political  balance on theis globe and this US investment might play an important role in maintaining it
[13:41] herman Bergson: Si vis pace, para bellum
[13:42] herman Bergson: If you want peace, prepare for war
[13:42] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): keeping someone from launching a nuclear war u mean, well thats one thing, and its sad that this is a threat at all that someone might
[13:42] CB Axel: Prepare, yes. But the US looks for places to fight.
[13:42] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): WOOOOSH BOOOOOOM!
[13:42] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako) whispers: but indeed thats fact and we dont want a global nuclear war for sure!
[13:43] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): (shivers)
[13:43] CB Axel: I think we should stop calling it the defense department and go back to calling it the war department.
[13:43] CB Axel: When was the last time we fought a defensive war?
[13:43] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): cold war
[13:43] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): revollution i guess
[13:43] herman Bergson: If you believe Bolton, you are right CB...:-)
[13:43] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): or 1812
[13:43] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and indeed it feels like its still going on a bit
[13:44] herman Bergson: But Trump isn't such a "hero"
[13:44] CB Axel: Bolton needs to choke on his mustache.
[13:44] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): eee NO!
[13:44] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): OMG!!!
[13:44] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): omg
[13:44] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): he is a villain if anything
[13:44] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but at least no big wars have started yet and hopefully will not
[13:45] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but trump plays a dangerous game
[13:45] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): for ex now with Iran
[13:45] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): heis having a terrible week
[13:45] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): what to thinkof a ciber war?
[13:45] CB Axel: I'm going to a play this weekend called "Oslo."
[13:45] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): scay beertje
[13:45] herman Bergson: Indeed...Europe is in peace for 75 years now....hasn't been such a long period ever, I think
[13:45] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): scary
[13:45] CB Axel: It's about the Oslo peace talks. Should be interesting.
[13:45] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hopefully ill remain so
[13:46] CB Axel: The US has been at war in the middle east for 18 years now.
[13:46] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): sigh
[13:46] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): :(
[13:46] herman Bergson: Yes...wars aren't fought by armies anymore, but by computers and economics
[13:46] CB Axel: Young people fighting there weren't even born when it started.
[13:46] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): and it is not even a real war
[13:46] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): never called by congress
[13:46] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): rally
[13:46] CB Axel nods
[13:46] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): really
[13:46] CB Axel: Our congress is a joke.
[13:46] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): sad  right now
[13:47] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): Cyber wars can easy wipe out man kind
[13:47] herman Bergson: Like the Catholic Church it seems, people loose faith ^_^
[13:47] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed
[13:47] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): they could
[13:47] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): turn off all the electricity
[13:47] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): power shut down, drinking water pumps stop, food refrigeration spoils
[13:47] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): in a country
[13:47] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): yep
[13:47] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): and water Gemma
[13:47] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): gas pumps stop
[13:47] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): transportation grind to a halt
[13:48] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed scary
[13:48] CB Axel: Both the Catholic Church and the US Congress stopped working for the people and exist only to enrich the men who run them.
[13:48] herman Bergson: Come on, peeps....not to pessimistic into the weekend ^_^
[13:48] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): well cb we elect some of them
[13:48] herman Bergson: Where there is time, there is hope :-))
[13:48] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): right herman
[13:48] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate) GIGGLES!!
[13:48] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ...LOL...
[13:48] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): all your fault
[13:48] CB Axel: lol
[13:48] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): is there time left?
[13:48] herman Bergson: So...Cheer up...enjoy the weekend and class dismissed ^_^
[13:49] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): so far
[13:49] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): Thank Youuuuuuuuuu!!
[13:49] CB Axel: I've had to stop listening to the news this week. It just makes me angry.
[13:49] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): bye for now
[13:49] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): did you watch the hearing?????
[13:49] CB Axel: I'll go to Chicago and have a good time this weekend. :)
[13:49] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): this morning???
[13:49] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): cu gemma
[13:49] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): amazing
[13:49] herman Bergson: Enjoy the fish Gemma :-)
[13:49] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako):

[13:50] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): bye for now
