1119: Criticism...

Everywhere you hear the term Artificial Intelligence. Human beings are said to be intelligent and now we can create intelligence artificially?

This suggests, that we have a precise understanding of what intelligence is, but is that the case?

Intelligence is a multifaceted and dynamic construct that encompasses a wide range of cognitive abilities, skills, and capacities. While psychometric approaches provide valuable insights into measuring intelligence,

alternative perspectives, such as multiple intelligences theory, offer a more comprehensive understanding of human cognitive diversity.

Ultimately, intelligence is shaped by a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and socio-cultural factors, underscoring its intricate nature and significance in human cognition and behavior.

Looking at intelligence from this angle makes you wonder what is meant by artificial intelligence. So far successes have been achieved in so-called weak Artificial Intelligence.

What AI scientists do these days is create programs that can operate in microworlds, for instance, a chess or Go program, a face recognition program, or a route planner.

The big problem is that the AI, developed for microworlds, can not directly be transferred to the real world. Take for instance the tragic accident with the self-driving Uber car. It killed a pedestrian.

When a route planner tells you where to go to get from A to B, the strong intelligence is in the head of the driver of the car A route planner can't play chess. The driver can and he is capable of a lot more.

Can we really emulate human intelligence with a combination of modern computer and logic? One critic was the American philosopher Hubert Dreyfus (1929 - 2017).

Dreyfus criticized the attempt to imitate human intelligence through the combination of the modern computer and the language of logic. He opposes the analogy of brown and the digital computer.

Logic must also be taken into account for the development of artificial intelligence.

According to Dreyfus, the human body and the ability to intuitively recognize the relevant properties of a situation play a crucial role in human intelligence and not a symbol system behind an algorithm.

Just for fun I asked ChatGPT, if it is intelligent. This was the answer:

-QUOTE- As an AI language model, I am designed to process and generate human-like text based on the vast amount of information I have been trained on.

While I can mimic aspects of human intelligence by understanding and generating natural language, it's important to recognize that my "intelligence" is fundamentally different from human intelligence.

I don't possess consciousness, emotions, or subjective experiences like humans do. Instead, my responses are generated based on patterns in data and algorithms, without true understanding or awareness.

However, I can provide useful and relevant information, engage in conversations, and assist with various tasks, showcasing a form of artificial intelligence tailored for specific purposes.

In summary, while ChatGPT demonstrates intelligence in specific tasks such as language understanding and generation, it does not possess the holistic, multi-dimensional intelligence characteristic of human beings. -END QUOTE-

An intelligent answer, I'd say.....

A headline in my newspaper: "UNESCO: AI generates sexist texts. Algorithms from companies like Meta and OpenAI have sexist tendencies. This is evident from a study by UNESCO."

Thank you for your attention again.

The Discussion

[ 13:17]  Max Chatnoir: Thanks, Herman!  Good answer from GPT, too!

[ 13:17]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): yes worked well

[ 13:17]  (beertje.beaumont): Thank you Herman

[ 13:17]  herman Bergson: Mark ONE statement of ChatGTP.....tons of text it was trained on and link that to the UNESCO conclusion :-)

[ 13:18]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): Indeed, as I said, its just a machine still with no real awareness of its surrouundings or what it is actually doing

[ 13:18]  herman Bergson: Like facial recognition apps....trained on millions of photos....OF MAINLTY WHITE PEOPLE

[ 13:18]  herman Bergson: Indeed Bejiita

[ 13:18]  Max Chatnoir: Alas, AI has been trained by humans!

[ 13:19]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate):  GIGGLES!!

[ 13:19]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ...LOL...

[ 13:19]  herman Bergson: and their biases, Max....indeed

[ 13:19]  herman Bergson: For instance.....

[ 13:19]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): like in the case with that car. The car have no idea what the concept, danger, human ect mean

[ 13:19]  Max Chatnoir: We have to clean up our act, first, maybe.

[ 13:19]  herman Bergson: They gave ChatGPT male names to associate with ptofessions....

[ 13:19]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and a digital machine trying to interpret our analog world well that is very hard

[ 13:19]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): using camera sradar or whatever

[ 13:20]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): it still cant understand anything what it "sees"

[ 13:20]  herman Bergson: and then they gave it female names and the order to link them to professions...

[ 13:20]  herman Bergson: which resultet in prositute , housekeeper, cook, care for children

[ 13:21]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ok

[ 13:21]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): swell

[ 13:21]  Max Chatnoir: Why the heck did "they" do that?

[ 13:21]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): good question sounds like 19th century

[ 13:22]  herman Bergson: Well...also here in the Netherlands are voices that ask for testing AI apps for biases

[ 13:22]  Max Chatnoir: Test the databases!

[ 13:22]  herman Bergson: For instance, when your name doesn't sound Dutch, they give you an extra check

[ 13:23]  herman Bergson: Name sounds Moroccan...mmmm...might be fraud

[ 13:23]  herman Bergson: If your name is Janssen...ahh...must be a good guy

[ 13:24]  herman Bergson: That is what some AI apps do

[ 13:24]  herman Bergson: They call it Risk Managment...

[ 13:24]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ha

[ 13:24]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): it makes bad and wrong assumptions

[ 13:24]   Beertje   (beertje.beaumont): lol, my name is French...drinking too much wine?

[ 13:24]  Max Chatnoir: So is mine!

[ 13:24]  herman Bergson: Who knows, Beertje

[ 13:24]   Beertje   (beertje.beaumont): grins

[ 13:25]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): it would check the heck out of my name cleanslate

[ 13:25]   Beertje   (beertje.beaumont): btw..Beaumont is a village in Belgium

[ 13:25]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ahha

[ 13:26]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ㋡

[ 13:26]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hehe

-crashed....

[ 13:30]  Max Chatnoir: Ah, here is Herman back!

[ 13:30]   Beertje   (beertje.beaumont): VWBPE..what does that mean?

[ 13:30]  Max Chatnoir: Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education

[ 13:30]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): Virtual world best practices in education

[ 13:30]  bergfrau Apfelbaum: wb Herman!

[ 13:30]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): wb Herman

[ 13:30]   Beertje   (beertje.beaumont): ah dankjewel Max

[ 13:30]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): aa is that that one event i visited last year?

[ 13:30]  herman Bergson: Yes, sorry....guess the VPN connection screwed up

[ 13:31]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ahha

[ 13:31]  Max Chatnoir: You might have, Bejiita.

[ 13:32]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ill check that out later

[ 13:32]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ㋡

[ 13:32]  herman Bergson: Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education? Hmmmm....Maybe I am the longest lasting lecturer in SL :-))

[ 13:32]  Max Chatnoir: I would not be surprised!

[ 13:33]  herman Bergson: But nobody ever paid attention to that :-))

[ 13:33]   Beertje   (beertje.beaumont): maybe they don't know

[ 13:33]  Max Chatnoir: Did you ever do a presentation at VWBPE?   You should!

[ 13:34]  herman Bergson: Yes indeed...hardly anybody knows :-)

[ 13:34]  herman Bergson: I never did, Max

[ 13:34]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): what is going on here ??

[ 13:34]  Max Chatnoir: Oh, we tell everybody about you, Herman.

[ 13:34]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): /me GIGGLES!!

[ 13:36]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ...LOL...

[ 13:36]  herman Bergson: Must be my age Gemma.....

[ 13:36]  Max Chatnoir: How many years now, Gemma.  18?

[ 13:36]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): guess so

[ 13:36]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): in sl?

[ 13:36]  herman Bergson: since 2007

[ 13:36]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): the vw?

[ 13:36]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): not sure

[ 13:36]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): i must ask elli

[ 13:37]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): maybe the main page says

[ 13:37]  herman Bergson: and 18 years and 3 months in SL

[ 13:37]  Max Chatnoir: Might....

[ 13:37]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): 17th year

[ 13:37]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): wow

[ 13:37]  herman Bergson: I never visited the  VWBPE

[ 13:37]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): well maybe this year you will

[ 13:38]  herman Bergson: or did I, GEMMA? :-)

[ 13:38]  bergfrau Apfelbaum: lol

[ 13:38]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): i dont know

[ 13:38]  Max Chatnoir: 17 years.  The 2023 was the 16th.

[ 13:38]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): you did bej

[ 13:38]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and there were a ot of seminars

[ 13:38]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): many!!

[ 13:38]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): yes

[ 13:38]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ah

[ 13:38]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): there is one involving AI

[ 13:39]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): but it is late

[ 13:39]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ok

[ 13:39]  herman Bergson: I made some presentation somewhere and you were there too Gemma

[ 13:39]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): scroll down the program

[ 13:39]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): that was at slbirthday

[ 13:39]  Max Chatnoir: Too many!  There are several sessions running at the same time.  I can never get to everything.

[ 13:39]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): i know

[ 13:39]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): i think they will all be filmed

[ 13:39]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): so

[ 13:39]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): can watch them later

[ 13:39]  Max Chatnoir: Yes, you can watch them later.

[ 13:39]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): i am at the Gateway most of the time

[ 13:40]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): but get to a few

[ 13:40]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): will sure be there the day the Lindens come

[ 13:40]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): but just seeing the lovely builds is a pleasure

[ 13:41]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): aaa yes it was really cozy

[ 13:41]  herman Bergson: You can build at the  VWBPE?

[ 13:41]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): no

[ 13:42]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): the different colleges do

[ 13:42]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): and some of the groups in sl do

[ 13:42]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): and the sponsers

[ 13:43]  herman Bergson: You've got a date for the event?

[ 13:43]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): i pasted it into your im

[ 13:43]  Max Chatnoir: Thursday through Saturday

[ 13:43]  herman Bergson: ok thnx...then I have a date :-)

[ 13:43]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): yes and scroll down for the presentations

[ 13:43]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): and times and places

[ 13:44]  Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ㋡

[ 13:44]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): oh hamlet au is a presenter

[ 13:45]  Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): wow

[ 13:45]  herman Bergson: Ok...let me finish one of the best educational projects in SL again :-)
