In 1950, when the first computers had just been invented, the mathematician Alan Turing (1912 - 1954) already asked whether machines would exhibit intelligence.
For him this meant the question: can there be a situation in which a person does not know whether he is dealing with a person or a machine.
Turing describes the following kind of game. Suppose that we have a person, a machine, and an interrogator. The interrogator is in a room separated from the other person and the machine.
The game's object is for the interrogator to determine which of the other two is the person, and which is the machine. The interrogator knows the other person and the machine by the labels ‘X’ and ‘Y’,
but, at least at the beginning of the game, does not know which of the other person and the machine is ‘X’, and at the end of the game says either ‘X is the person and Y is the machine’ or ‘X is the machine and Y is the person’.
The interrogator is allowed to put questions to the person and the machine of the following kind: “Will X please tell me whether X plays chess?”
Whichever of the machine and the other person is X must answer questions that are addressed to X. The object of the machine is to try to cause the interrogator to mistakenly conclude that the machine is the other person.
The object of the other person is to try to help the interrogator to correctly identify the machine.
Intelligence in this context is defined as the ability to have a meaningful conversation, which appears to be based on thinking,
Although for Turing the question of whether machines eventually would be able to think was futuristic, today that has become a real question.
Are the days that only we are the unique organisms that can think over? What to do with the growing application of Artificial Intelligence?
Let's investigate such questions from a more philosophical perspective. Is, for instance, ChatGPT intelligent, does it think, does it possess real knowledge, can it create new ideas, and so on?
Thank you for your attention....

[13:09] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): Thank you Herman
[13:09] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ㋡
[13:09] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): looking forward to this topic
[13:09] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed interesting subject indeed!
[13:10] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and perfect for mr coderat
[13:10] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ㋡
[13:10] herman Bergson: ok :-)
[13:10] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): AI is all rage today
[13:10] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed
[13:10] Lecturehall: 2024-02-01 [23:10] Max Chatnoir
[13:10] herman Bergson: Yes and is much more that just a chatbot.
[13:10] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): hallo Max
[13:11] herman Bergson: Hey Max :-)
[13:11] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hi Max
[13:11] Max Chatnoir: Sorry, I lost track of time!
[13:11] herman Bergson: I just revealed the new topic
[13:12] bergfrau Apfelbaum: No machine has its own knowledge. only what you learn from programmers
[13:12] bergfrau Apfelbaum: so a clever parrot.-)
[13:12] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): i copied it for Max already
[13:12] herman Bergson: I gonna try a philosophical study of Artificial Intelligence
[13:12] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): true, even the machine appears to be inteligent it still cant feel what it actually is doing like wwe can
[13:12] herman Bergson: Oh nice `beertje
[13:12] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): graag gedaan:)
[13:13] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): for ex Dalle can only create its images upon 10000000000s of TB of data we have fed it with, it will never be able I think to create something from scratch using its own imagination
[13:13] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): its still just a machine
[13:13] herman Bergson: It is idd an important question how to evaluatye the activities of ïntelligent"machines
[13:13] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): even its still impressive what it can do now
[13:14] herman Bergson: There have been tests like the turing test.
[13:14] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): yes,
[13:14] herman Bergson: ChatGPT didnt perform well
[13:15] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and we use it all time nowadays albait in a less exciting variant = CAPTCHA
[13:15] Max Chatnoir: True!
[13:15] herman Bergson: Only 14% failed to identify the machine.
[13:15] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): to stop bots from accessing websites
[13:16] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): talking with a friend at same time, what about using an AI against another AI
[13:16] herman Bergson: I hope I can make this new subject into a goood project
[13:16] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): he saw an ukrainian and russian drone doing an AI powered dogfight
[13:17] Max Chatnoir: Can ChatGPT pass the CAPTCHA?
[13:17] herman Bergson: yes...it is everywhere these days
[13:17] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): good wuesttion
[13:17] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hmm
[13:17] herman Bergson: I don't know Max, but image recognition is already well developed
[13:18] herman Bergson: Maybe we'll find the answer
[13:19] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): self driving cars get better and better, the only issue is a computer can for ex never understand the concept of danger, so its extremley important the programming gets done right
[13:19] herman Bergson: There you have it.....can computers feel/
[13:20] herman Bergson: or have feelings
[13:20] herman Bergson: can it make moral judgements?
[13:20] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): a computer trying to follow and recognize analog data like a video stream from a trafficked highway vs say programming a 3D printer/CNC machine where we speak a language (g code) closer to the machine
[13:20] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): wehre is the risk of error biggest
[13:21] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): in the first case cause the comouter might missinterpret the analog data
[13:21] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and drive over say a child
[13:21] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): it have no concept of what a child or a life actually is
[13:22] herman Bergson: Well, I guess we can run into a lot of challenging questions
[13:22] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): it seems it can give you a recepy of biological waepons
[13:23] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): speaking of danger
[13:23] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): so does a computer have moral?
[13:23] Max Chatnoir: But the question of assigning morality is an interesting one.
[13:24] herman Bergson: Indeed Beertje... a question we definitely must investigate
[13:24] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): yes
[13:25] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): can be interesting indeed
[13:25] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): our brains get a lot of work to do:)
[13:25] herman Bergson: Ok, enough to study and read on :-)
[13:25] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ㋡
[13:25] Max Chatnoir: Maybe we could ask ChatGPT about the abortion problem.
[13:26] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): try it
[13:26] herman Bergson: Ìt will answer what people have put into the databank of ChatGPT
[13:27] herman Bergson: So it can be pretty biased
[13:27] Max Chatnoir: So it might say maybe this maybe that?
[13:27] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hmm as said, it can only use what we have only fed it
[13:27] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): before
[13:27] herman Bergson: Or ask ChatGPT about racism and discrimination
[13:28] herman Bergson: Could be very revealing
[13:28] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): there have been many cases where chat bots have gone really aggressive and racist when following all that it have learned
[13:28] herman Bergson: yes.
[13:28] bergfrau Apfelbaum: Me: What do you think about abortion?
Ai: My stance on abortion is neutral. I try to base my answers on facts while being sensitive to people's feelings. Ultimately, it is a personal decision and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. What do you think about it?
[13:29] Max Chatnoir: So maybe this maybe that.
[13:29] herman Bergson: No moral judgement
[13:30] Max Chatnoir: Maybe it "knows" it cant' make those decisions.
[13:30] Max Chatnoir: can't
[13:30] herman Bergson: What facts does this AI mean?
[13:30] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i say AI cant have moral, it cant really understand meaning of language
[13:30] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): it still sees only 1010010100 in the end
[13:31] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): its a pattern matching machine if u want to
[13:31] herman Bergson: Yes, Bejiita, but yet it can produce intelligent conversation, write poems and essays
[13:32] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed, its kind of impressive
[13:32] herman Bergson: Well, let's save all these questions for on coming lectures :-)
[13:33] bergfrau Apfelbaum: ok:-)
[13:33] herman Bergson: Let's enjoy the coming weekend :-)
[13:33] bergfrau Apfelbaum: thank you Herman and class
[13:33] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): yes
[13:33] bergfrau Apfelbaum: yay
[13:33] Max Chatnoir: Thank, Herman.
[13:33] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): one thing i have tried it for is indeeed together with Stackoverflow when programming my games
[13:33] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): Thank you Herman
[13:33] herman Bergson: Thank you all again....class dismissed...
