1166: Stupidity...

If you ask Russia or China "Why are you here?", I guess both countries would answer: We are here to put an end to American dominance in this world.

So, both countries have started a war against the US. That is clear. Putin excels in stupidity by applying antiquated ideas from the WW II period and tries to attack the US by attacking Ukraine which implicitly also concerns NATO.

China is much smarter and issues DeepSeek, development costs were 6 million dollars, making use of more general chipsets, because they have no access to the dedicated chips of ASML and NVidia.

Result? The hundreds of millions of dollars in AI projects of the US companies are simply being ridiculed, resulting in huge stock market losses for these companies.

And lo and behold! Against the more than 700,000 dead and wounded from Putin's stupidity, there are the billions in profits of the Chinese DeepSeek. And the war goes on...

I put it to a test. I asked DeepSeek exactly the same essay question as ChatGPT. The result: answer as fast as with ChatGPT, with only differences in details. So, it really is a photo-finish.....

And now our project continued....

I have the feeling that starting from the question "Why am I here?" and now slowly moving into the question "Who am I?", I have almost unnoticed begun a project within a project.

That is not a problem because it makes sense that we try to understand WHO is asking this question about the meaning of being here.

Up to now, we have a picture of the questioner. In diverse cultures, he comes to the same answers and enumerates several qualities, which we have called virtues,

which you should have, to be a human being that can live in peace and prosper with your fellowmen. And we all know that homo sapiens has not yet reached that level of coexisting.

Evolution is an ongoing process and in that process, our brian has not yet evolved enough to get rid of that specific quality by natural selection: stupidity.

The word is a little misleading because you tend to think that it is some property of homo sapiens like blue can be a property of the sky.

If we talk about stupidity we actually mean behavior that we qualify as stupid. The most characteristic feature of this behavior is that it harms others, while you gain nothing and also suffer harm yourself.

A clear example is nuclear war. Sure, any leader can start a nuclear war and harm his enemy, but such a leader realizes very well that he will also suffer enormous damage himself and thus will discard the option as stupid.

You see even stupid behavior among animals. A lioness thought a hippo would be a nice meal and attacked the massive animal.

It harmed the hippo, indeed, but the lioness was injured so severely that it eventually died. In other words, a stupid choice of prey.

So, when we discuss stupidity, keep in mind that we are actually talking about a specific kind of behavior. And this behavior is no modern invention.

From the beginning of philosophical thinking homo sapiens was aware of this shortcoming. Stupidity, as a concept, has intrigued philosophers since the dawn of intellectual thought.

Although often dismissed as a trivial topic, it is deeply intertwined with questions of human nature, morality, and epistemology.

The Ancient Greeks were among the first to grapple with the idea of human folly. Socrates (469–399 BC) claims that his wisdom lies in recognizing his own ignorance,

contrasting this with the hubris of those who believe they know what they do not. For Socrates, stupidity was not merely a lack of knowledge but a refusal to engage in self-reflection and philosophical inquiry.

He believed that true wisdom lay in recognizing one's own ignorance, and those who failed to do so were, in his view, morally and intellectually deficient.

And this is just the beginning....

The floor is yours..... thank you all....

The Discussion

[13:22] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): Thank you Herman

[13:22] Max Chatnoir: Thank you , Herman.

[13:22] Max Chatnoir: I have a question about a recent experience that may relate to what you said about China.

[13:22] Max Chatnoir: But I can wait to ask it.

[13:23] herman Bergson: No. go ahead, Max

[13:23] Max Chatnoir: OK. Recently I went to a chamber concert that featured a well-known player of the erhu, which is a two-stringed Chinese instrument.

[13:24] Max Chatnoir: The concert wasn't recorded and I want to send a friend a sample of this guy's playing, so I looked for a Youtube.

[13:24] Max Chatnoir: Or something like it.

[13:25] Max Chatnoir: I could not find a single recording of this person playing, although he is well known.  Is this some kind of chinese restriction?

[13:25] herman Bergson: I wouldn't expect it to be a Chinese restriction, unless the player is a dissident.

[13:26] Max Chatnoir: I don't know, but I wouldn't think so.

[13:27] Max Chatnoir: Maybe if I had done the search in Chinese I would have got different results.

[13:27] herman Bergson: What was the name of the musician?

[13:28] Max Chatnoir: Zhu Changyao

[13:29] herman Bergson: I see a lot of erhu clips on Youtube....

[13:29] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg_Wh8pqZEI

[13:29] Max Chatnoir: With him?

[13:29] herman Bergson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cztyHqpfjJ8

[13:29] herman Bergson: this is the guy

[13:30] bergfrau Apfelbaum: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0vhtdDhVJ4

[13:30] bergfrau Apfelbaum: and here

[13:30] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): found him?

[13:30] herman Bergson: 28 minutes concert

[13:30] herman Bergson: 38

[13:30] bergfrau Apfelbaum: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nt-cE6c7n3c&list=RDEMIW7WpLcDXfN6y4H-wTkwxw&start_radio=1

[13:31] herman Bergson: 朱昌耀 中国民谣二胡之夜音乐会 上半 Chinese Folk Music Concert, Erhu by Zhu Changyao 1/2

[13:31] Max Chatnoir: That is him!  Well, to proceed with our discussion of stupidity....

[13:31] herman Bergson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cztyHqpfjJ8

[13:31] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako):

[13:31] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): we found it thats the important thing

[13:31] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): gonna check later

[13:32] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): not familiar with this instrument

[13:32] Max Chatnoir: Yes!  Thank you so much.  I don't know why it didn't come up for me.

[13:32] herman Bergson: wow!

[13:32] Max Chatnoir: Just two strings!

[13:32] herman Bergson: Marvelous music!

[13:33] Max Chatnoir: It's an interesting sound.  When they played their encore, about horseracing, he produced a perfect horse neigh from that instrument.

[13:33] herman Bergson: They have also cellos in the orchestra :-)

[13:33] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): listening now.....

[13:33] bergfrau Apfelbaum: wonderful sounds

[13:34] Max Chatnoir: Well, thank you all so much.

[13:34] bergfrau Apfelbaum: Herman, your next instrument :-) parallel to the cello

[13:34] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): cool

[13:34] Max Chatnoir: There you go, Herman!

[13:34] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): aaa

[13:34] herman Bergson: Wonderful!!!!

[13:35] herman Bergson:  ♫♪♫♪ ♪♫♪♫   APPLAUSE    ♪♫♪♫ ♫♪♫♪

[13:35] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): YAY! (yay!)

[13:36] Max Chatnoir: Are you all searching from europe?

[13:36] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): yes

[13:36] herman Bergson: I don't know from which period this music is...it sounds rather modern and harmonic

[13:36] bergfrau Apfelbaum: yes

[13:37] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): i thought 2019

[13:37] herman Bergson: yes...from the Netherlands and Austria

[13:37] Max Chatnoir: No, that can't be it.  The link you posted wasn't blocked for me.   I probably spelled his name wrong or something!

[13:38] herman Bergson: Yes Beertje, it doesnt sound like a Chinese Bach

[13:38] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): we are good in Chinese:))

[13:38] Max Chatnoir: I'll try the search again, and let you know if I still have problems.

[13:38] bergfrau Apfelbaum: the high notes are so clear and pure! almost innocent....

[13:38] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): moovie sais it was 4 years ago

[13:38] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): aaa yes

[13:39] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but thats just the recording, but when was the music itself composed

[13:39] Max Chatnoir: Oh, it's a wonderful instrument!  I'd never even heard of it.  The concert was to celebrate the lunar new year, and there were a lot of chinese people in the audience.  They did the program notes in both languages.

[13:39] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): was it for this concert or?

[13:40] herman Bergson: Interesting to see that he holds his bow like we used to hold it in the Middle Ages and Renaissance

[13:40] Max Chatnoir: He was the featured soloist.

[13:40] Max Chatnoir: Yes, he hold the bow like I have seen people hold it playing contrabass.

[13:41] herman Bergson: Interesting too, here he uses vibrato

[13:41] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): no stupidity in the orchestra

[13:41] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hehe indeed not

[13:41] Max Chatnoir: Yes, I noticed that.  The vibrato.

[13:42] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): only brilliance

[13:42] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako):

[13:42] herman Bergson: not a single string Beertje :-)

[13:42] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont):

[13:42] herman Bergson: But I find it sound rather Western.....

[13:42] bergfrau Apfelbaum: this is the erhu, one of China's most important instruments. It has a history of over 4,000 years and was an essential part of folk performances, operas and banquets in the imperial dynasties. When played, the erhu stands vertically with the tip of its neck pointing towards the sky.

[13:42] Max Chatnoir: Yes, but the scale is sort of pentatonic.

[13:43] Max Chatnoir: But he also played an arrangement of Yankee Doodle!

[13:43] herman Bergson: Yes, that could be...not an expert on that:-)

[13:44] Max Chatnoir: I think most of the music was contemporary -- in this concert.

[13:45] herman Bergson: Get that feeling too

[13:47] herman Bergson: Well, at least no politics in this concert....

[13:47] herman Bergson: available on Youtube

[13:47] Max Chatnoir: Well, I feel like an idiot, but I'm glad I asked.

[13:48] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): the important thing is we fond it

[13:48] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): you gave us a wonderfull concert Max

[13:48] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): And I'm gonna watch it after this

[13:48] herman Bergson: No Max, there is nothing wrong with not knowing something, like Socrates already said :-)

[13:48] Max Chatnoir: Happy to share!

[13:48] herman Bergson: Yes it is wonderful

[13:48] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): "new" instrument ive not heard before to experience

[13:49] herman Bergson: Such a sound in such a small instrument

[13:49] Max Chatnoir: Yes, it's remarkable!

[13:49] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ah

[13:52] herman Bergson: Instead of a discussion a Chinese concert....again the Chinese outsmarted us....:-)

[13:52] Max Chatnoir: Oh, dear!  AI wars!

[13:54] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): Microsoft have become so horny on AI they have canceled windows 12 and instead is making a new computer driven ompletley by AI and they are also starting up 3 mile island again and all the power goes to Microsofts AI servers

[13:55] Max Chatnoir: Thanks, Bergie!

[13:55] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): The question is will I soon need to pay 20-30 dollars a month  in AI fees just to be able to turn my windows 11 computer on

[13:55] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ?

[13:56] herman Bergson: Good point Bejiita

[13:57] Max Chatnoir: I hope not!

[13:57] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): sure it is useful but it absoutley EATS electricity

[13:57] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): = costly to run3

[13:57] Max Chatnoir: oops.

[13:57] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): lol Bergie

[13:57] bergfrau Apfelbaum: grins

[13:58] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako):

[13:58] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): that was my laugh fee from you

[13:58] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): lol

[13:59] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): anyways its gone so far they have renamed Office to CoPilot, Copilot to me is their code assistant for programming

[13:59] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but that was just the initial use i guess

[14:00] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): tried it a bit in the free tier in Vs Code

[14:00] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): worls ok surley when you are stuck

[14:00] herman Bergson: By the way...China is killing American AI most efficiently.....

[14:00] herman Bergson: DeepSeek is Open Source!!!!!!

[14:00] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ok

[14:00] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): aaa i see

[14:00] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): The China version is much cheaper

[14:00] Max Chatnoir: I heard that!

[14:01] Max Chatnoir: about it being open source.

[14:01] herman Bergson: So everyone on this earth can see how it works and "steal" the code

[14:01] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): question is do i support Chinese communist government by using it?

[14:01] herman Bergson: The Chinese version is for free Beertje

[14:01] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): the ethical side

[14:01] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): well +

[14:01] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): open source means noone really own it and can mod it

[14:01] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ect

[14:01] herman Bergson: By using Windows you support US politics Bejiita :-)

[14:02] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): they can use oure data against us

[14:02] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): well true

[14:02] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i just want machines that work and i use AI now and then indeed but now EVERYTHING focus on AI it seems

[14:03] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): a bit too much

[14:03] Max Chatnoir: So, can access  to AI prevent stupidity?

[14:03] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but i dint think it can replace us for on thing, reused AI material come out as crap

[14:03] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): like recompressed data

[14:04] herman Bergson: Interesting question Max

[14:04] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): NVidias CEO says programmers will all be  out of work and noone need to understand code cause AI will take over all

[14:04] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and so and so

[14:04] herman Bergson: I dont think so.....

[14:04] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed

[14:05] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): its  a helpful tool but don't overuse it

[14:05] Max Chatnoir: What happens if you ask Deep Seek if violent criminals should be released?

[14:05] herman Bergson: one aspect of stupidity is refusing to accept factual proof or think critically

[14:05] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hmm ineeed Max

[14:06] herman Bergson: I think the answer would be...if the criminal is convicted ....no release possible

[14:07] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): Trump releases violent criminals while departing others because they are black no matter who the person is, says a bit about him!

[14:07] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): HUUUUH!

[14:07] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): GUUUUUH!

[14:07] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): sigh

[14:07] Max Chatnoir: I don't think that prison is a great way to reform people's bad decisions, but what else have we got?

[14:07] herman Bergson: if you are referring to a Trump action, Max, what he has done is unforgivable...

[14:07] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): yep!

[14:08] herman Bergson: He overruled the justice system simply by a political decision....

[14:08] herman Bergson: politics above the law

[14:08] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): like some say, what he have done in a few days will take 100 years at least to repair

[14:08] herman Bergson: And that should not be possible or legally acceptable

[14:09] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): and he is only 1 week president.....

[14:09] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed herman, its crazy

[14:09] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and scary

[14:09] herman Bergson: The American Dream, you know....

[14:09] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): esp cause US affects the entire world, not only themselves

[14:09] herman Bergson: To me it is becoming a nightmare

[14:12] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): every time Trump have become president i have played REM - its the end of the world on full blast

[14:12] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): suiting theme

[14:12] Max Chatnoir: REM is a game?

[14:12] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): the group rem

[14:13] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0GFRcFm-aY

[14:13] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): this one

[14:13] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): says a bit how i feel about it

[14:13] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): (shudders)

[14:14] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hopefully its not going THAT far but

[14:14] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): still creepy

[14:15] Max Chatnoir: Wow, that is some song!

[14:15] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): good song with a message

[14:15] Max Chatnoir: Yes, not so far out...

[14:15] herman Bergson: The concert is over....class dismissed :-)

[14:15] herman Bergson: Thank you for the music Max

[14:15] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): :))

[14:15] Max Chatnoir: Thank YOU all for finding the Youtubes!

[14:16] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako):

[14:16] Max Chatnoir: You're all brilliant!!

[14:16] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): oh we know:)))))))))))

[14:16] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): lol

[14:16] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): one comment This song is strangely comforting at this crazy time we're all living in now.

[14:16] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and that was 4 years ago

[14:16] Lukkie Sands: wow...even by doing nothing :-))

[14:17] Lukkie Sands: yeah!!!

[14:17] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): we do what we can at least

[14:17] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i feel finte bout that
