1039: Let's have a closer look......

Actually, I had a completely different subject in mind for today's lecture, but my morning newspaper made me change my mind.

"Don't fall for the hype: ChatGPT is really, really dumb". That was the headline of a column in my morning newspaper. A nice surprise after my lecture of last Tuesday.

There I showed you that ChatGPT was able to offer decent replies to my questions, which I wouldn't qualify as dumb answers. On the contrary, I admit ChatGPT was philosophically biased, but in a way that pleased me.

The columnist Ilyaz Nasrullah usually doesn't write about hypes, but this time he writes: "Obviously I've changed my mind, and that's because of the articles that appeared in Trouw about ChatGPT.

They didn't tell you what you should know: ChatGPT is really stupid and completely unreliable.

Admittedly, that statement is not entirely correct. The word 'stupid' makes it seem like there is some intelligence behind ChatGPT after all, just very little. What I mean is that the ChatGPT is totally lacking in intelligence." -end quote-

A bold statement, is he right? As an example, he tells about his attempt to play chess with ChatGPT. It was a disaster. I tried it myself too and indeed a disaster.

The first move pawn e2 - e4 was correct, like my answer pawn e7 - e5, but then the Artificial Intelligence made a 100% illegal move. I brought it to its attention,

Chat GPT answered you are right, I apologize for my error, and then it corrected itself by making another illegal move.

-Quote- "“Okay”, you may think, “ChatGPT can't play chess. So what? It can do other things. Moreover, many people can't play chess either, they aren't stupid either, are they?"

That's right. It's not about ChatGPT making mistakes, but what the mistakes show about how the technology behind it works. Computer scientists call software programs such as ChatGPT large language models.

Such a program is created by feeding it with astronomical amounts of text. Based on those texts, a model is built of words that should probably follow each other. So ChatGPT is a plausible sentence generator.

Those sentences are produced without an understanding of the words used, but with the help of that incredibly elaborate statistical model of those words." -end quote-

A nice designation: "plausible sentence generator". That is what ChatGPT did when answering my philosophical questions and as I said last Tuesday: such an Artificial Intelligence only produces what humans have given it as input.

The article ends thus: -Quote-"Hundreds, if not thousands, of subtle and explicit examples of this behavior can be found online in many fields of knowledge.

Unfortunately, the behavior is inherent in the technology itself and is exactly what makes ChatGPT completely unreliable. Even when it appears that it "understands" a subject, it is no more than an impressive illusion.

So don't fall for the hype, because this illusion is dangerous if you don't see through it." -end quote-

Do I agree with the author? If you are an expert yourself, you can judge ChatGPT's answers on their correctness and quality.

If you are a layman on a certain topic, then it does indeed become problematic to determine what the answers of ChatGPT are useful to you.

You can protect yourself against this by asking the question in Google "What is the reliability of ChatGPT?" Very educational......it will put the whole AI phenomenon in the right perspective.

Thank you for your attention again....

[13:18] herman Bergson: But there is some more....maybe helpful for Bejiita...
[13:18] herman Bergson: The ChatGPT is good in writing and debugging programming code
[13:18] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): There was a guy who tried it with the game engine Unity, it can create a player controller but not more specific stuff as i got it in the video
[13:19] herman Bergson: ahh...
[13:19] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7JOIv7Y_jo
[13:19] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i need to try it myself with both Unity and Unreal Engine and also Godot
[13:20] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): in all different programming options and see what i can get
[13:20] herman Bergson: So....as a final conclusion.....if you know what you are talking about ChatGPT may be fun or even helpful, but as such....we may have our doubts
[13:20] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i guess it will improve
[13:20] herman Bergson: I think so too
[13:20] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): there are other programs similar i guess like even amazon alexa
[13:21] herman Bergson: My questions were on a subject that certainly would be a topic for AI
[13:21] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): however i still mostly want to use it as a reference, after all i like to program and just copy pasting stuff then u dont understand ut yourself what is happening
[13:21] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate) GIGGLES!!
[13:21] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ...LOL...
[13:21] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): i am going to try another one
[13:21] oola Neruda: alexa makes me think of BIG BROTHER
[13:21] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): just for research into them
[13:21] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): however as a debug reference alternative to say my famous stackoverflow.com im on for sure
[13:21] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): right oola I don't have it
[13:21] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): my  sister does tho
[13:22] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): for music
[13:22] herman Bergson: ah yes Gemma...I could ask other ones the same questions of last Tuesday and see what they  will answer
[13:22] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): there i think is no danger chat GPT will turn all coders into script kiddies = those who just copy and paste stuff without understanding anything of it
[13:23] herman Bergson: That won't work, I guess Bejiita
[13:23] herman Bergson: You need understanding of what you are doing
[13:23] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and as i say i enjoy my coding sessions and the challenge . What i don't like is when i get stuck on things for a long time and cant find a solution and here it might help a bit
[13:24] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): yes
[13:24] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): good luck
[13:24] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): like now recently i finally found how i separate digits in an integer, its just 3 lines of code in the end
[13:24] herman Bergson: The AI doesn't need that because it uses huge amounts of texts that are already understood by humans
[13:25] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): the challenge was to find an explanation that made sense in that THESE 3 lines is all u need
[13:25] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and not everything around3
[13:25] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): intresting
[13:25] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): where in the code is what i link for performed so that i can use that wherever i need that logic ect
[13:25] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): look
[13:26] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): stuff like this
[13:26] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): I was annoyed I could not get into it
[13:26] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): when i make my fantasy worlds
[13:26] theo Velde is offline.
[13:26] herman Bergson: One of the ever returning questions is, will an AI-system eventually get a mind of its own.
[13:26] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): no
[13:27] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): cant without feelings
[13:27] herman Bergson: I agree Gemma....
[13:27] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): human feelings
[13:27] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): the fear of the terminators
[13:27] herman Bergson: as long as we don't understand how the brain is able to generate our mind, how will we ever realize it in a machine?
[13:27] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): machines that on themselves decide to wipe all life out and have no off switch
[13:27] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed not possible i think luckily
[13:28] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): HOPEFULLY thats the case
[13:28] herman Bergson: We know how we think....we use logic.....so that we can copy into chips
[13:28] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): yes
[13:28] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): people have always feared new technology, 100 years ago they thought that when a car was faster than 40 km hour the human body couldn't handle it
[13:28] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): Unreal 5, a CNC machine or robot may bee soo advanced but its still say me who tell the machine what to do
[13:28] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): very true beertje
[13:29] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): loads of things
[13:29] herman Bergson: They were right Beertje :-)))))
[13:29] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): even the telephone
[13:29] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): and radio ツ
[13:29] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): lots needs to be adjusted tho to be safer
[13:29] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): in newer tech
[13:29] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): my 3d printer for ex only do what the CNC code tells it to, go there move there ect, its a robot, strictly following instructions i have given it with a CAD CAM software
[13:30] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): i made a cute green turtle for my friends before also who visited now
[13:30] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ㋡
[13:30] herman Bergson: Robots build complete cars....
[13:30] bergfrau Apfelbaum is offline.
[13:30] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): program is in the machine, just press run and it makes one
[13:30] herman Bergson: assemble them
[13:30] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): but they need people to run the programs
[13:30] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): for each part
[13:31] herman Bergson: indeed
[13:31] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): exactly
[13:31] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): and fix them
[13:31] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): look at sl
[13:31] herman Bergson: The machines have no understanding at all of what they are doing
[13:31] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate) GIGGLES!!
[13:31] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ...LOL...
[13:31] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): every week
[13:31] herman Bergson: we have
[13:31] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): have to adjust
[13:31] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): someone need to tell it what to do and then it strictly follows it, this is however why robots and CNC machines including 3d printers are so good at making things repeativley and same all time
[13:32] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): as long as the code is same machine will do same
[13:32] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): and nothing else
[13:32] herman Bergson: yes,,,
[13:32] herman Bergson: Bergie crashed?
[13:32] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): aaw
[13:32] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): oops
[13:32] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): i think so
[13:32] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): well THAT is a thing that can occur random even with machines
[13:32] herman Bergson: Or power gone down?
[13:32] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate) GIGGLES!!
[13:32] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ...LOL...
[13:32] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): true
[13:33] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): no power or crap in memory = crash and shutdown
[13:33] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): or code bugs
[13:33] herman Bergson: That's SLife, Bejiita ^_^
[13:33] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): buts are VERY important to have sorted out esp in safety critical applications
[13:33] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): bugs
[13:33] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): im buggy, cant type, or just oo much wine
[13:34] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): what do you do with your programs bejita?
[13:34] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): still have a glass near here
[13:34] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate) whispers: can one see a result anywhere?
[13:34] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): game development in different game engines and running my 3d printer
[13:34] herman Bergson: Anyway...now you are warned for the AI hype....it looks good, but there still are a lot of things to watch out for
[13:34] bergfrau Apfelbaum is online.
[13:34] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): at moment i work on a remake of Baldurs Gate, another game i grew up with
[13:34] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): early RPG
[13:35] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): one of the first computer based RPG games and its awesome
[13:35] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): H
[13:35] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ah
[13:35] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): will we ever see any anywhere?
[13:35] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): follows the Dunegons and Dragons ruleset
[13:35] herman Bergson: Can we see some of the stuff you make somewhere, Bejiita?
[13:36] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): *~*☟☹☟*~* Hey, Welcome back! *~*☟☹☟*~*
[13:36] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): wilkommen Bergie:)
[13:36] herman Bergson: D&D...I remember that game....very popular in the 80s
[13:36] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ill try give a demo, feels like i make some progress now, i before fixed some bug in the so called Game Instance, where Unreal save data between levels
[13:36] oola Neruda: wekcome back... Bergfrau
[13:36] bergfrau Apfelbaum: ty:-) had a crash
[13:36] herman Bergson: Welcome back, Bergie
[13:36] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): the Game Instance is the only place that dont reset when u change level so need to save all stuff there before when using UE
[13:36] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): wb Bergie
[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5w594D3qtLs&t=141s
[13:37] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): this guy explains it well, this is blueprint and UE4 but works the same in UE5 although i use c++ for this particular case
[13:37] herman Bergson: I think we can conclude our discussion now and looka t other stuff :-)
[13:37] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ok
[13:37] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): good
[13:38] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ㋡
[13:38] herman Bergson: Thank you all again for your participation :-)
[13:38] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): back to materialism
[13:38] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ♥ Thank Youuuuuuuuuu!! ♥
[13:38] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): Godot? No its Unreal Engine!
[13:38] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): lol
[13:38] herman Bergson: Indeed....finally I can begin the tour, Gemma
[13:38] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): aaa whan u create in these are not esp material thats for sure
[13:38] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako):      virtual
[13:38] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): but its cool stuff
[13:38] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ㋡
[13:38] herman Bergson: But we also have to stay alert for new developments
[13:39] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): when u get the hang of it
[13:39] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): we haev been beginning for weeks
[13:39] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): indeed very true
[13:39] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): stuff moves fast now
[13:39] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): have a good weekend all
[13:39] herman Bergson: Ok Gemma, promiss....next lecture we'll dive into the real history
[13:39] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): great
[13:39] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): hugs Gemma
[13:39] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate) GIGGLES!!
[13:39] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): ...LOL...
[13:39] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): hugs
[13:40] Gemma (gemma.cleanslate): bye for now
[13:40] .: Beertje :. (beertje.beaumont): bye Gemma
[13:40] oola Neruda: baieee
[13:40] herman Bergson: See you, Gemma ^_^
[13:40] Particle Physicist Bejiita (bejiita.imako): ill catch up i guess, i will be away next week with work a few days
